I'm not new to the concept of affirmative action but something really confuses. I am a white male. Lets take Yale for example. As of 2007, Yale is 71% white and only 13% asian etc. What i dont understand is that people tell me because of affirmative action, i will have a lesser chance of getting into Yale for example. But if more minority students are let in then why is the school still 71% white!!! I am just confused. Being white shouldnt I be more likely for acceptance due those numbers? How does affirmative action work in this case? PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!! THANKS

uhhh the school is not 71 percent white....

yes it is......go on yale.edu as of 2006-2007 school year the school is 71% white , 13% asian 8% black etc......look at the website before you make assumptions .....ANYONE ELSE ANSWER MY QUESTION PLEASE

You have to think of this in context. If you are of minority race, there are far less people to compete with. If you are white you have much more people, and often much higher quality candidates to compete with. So its actually harder.

ok i understand that. but any other opinions???????? or how does it work!!!

affirmative action hurts asians the most. Supposedly it actaully does not hurt whites as much. Take a look at berkeley who does not practice AA and asians are 45%. Ok taken granted Berekely is public but still 45% is a lot.

I second A-Card...and to the OP...please try not to be so "impatient" while posting.

Well, one must consider the proportion of a college population that is a certain ethnicity in relation to the overall demographic proportion. Another thing to check is the fraction of a certain ethnic group that is admitted compared to the fraction of whites admitted. The overall demographic of the school may be misleading.

First of all Affirmative Action does not work the same way everywhere and many schools do not even practice it. Diversity means many things: Income level, first generation college student, ethnicity, gender, geographic location, international student, etc etc. And you are right, most schools in the country are a large majority white with the exception of California. So don't worry just apply I guarantee you will get into school somewhere fine.

Yale is 61% white. If you factor in internationals, this is roughly representative of the U.S. population. For one of the more affluent groups in the country I don't see anything wrong with this.
