TakingBack -- the purpose of this thread isn't to discuss AA, it's just a survey so I'll keep my comments brief.

I don't think anyone deserves 'special treatment' per se. I busted my arse in high school, and I don't attribute my skin color to my admissions. I support AA because I think college should be more than merely an academic experience; We live in a society that is divided by racial lines more often than most of us would like to admit, and I think that living among a diverse student body and interacting with people outside of your racial comfort zone benefits all parties. My high school was pretty much all white & some Asians, and I was shocked by how ignorant, narrow-minded, and just plain racist people could be without even realizing it. I am 100% confident that their attitudes were heavily influences by the homogeneity of their surroundings. If you've never interacted with someone from a different background, clearly you are only going to view them in abstract rather than human terms. I have other reasons as well, but they aren't as pertinent so I won't state them here.

As for economic background, I can't believe anyone wouldn't support AA in this regard. Why should anyone be penalized because they haven't had the benefit of wealth? Why would you want to perpetuate the cycle of poverty? That's not good for anyone on the economic spectrum in the long run.
