I think there's room for Affirmative Action based both on race and on socioeconomic background. The charge that blacks and other minorities aren't oppressed anymore is a demonstrably false, and AA should be employed to compensate for the racial inequalities present in society. That said, it is my opinion that we are divided more by class than anything else. A lot of (but not all) of the inequalities between whites and minorities can be explained by socioeconomic factors, i.e. poor schools, less educated parents, lack of opportunity in general, etc. A rich black person certainly has more opportunity than a poor white person, that's for sure. In summation, I guess I support AA based on both criteria, but much more so for socioeconomic background. I also think there are other solutions, such as socializing education. The fact that the quality of one's public school is determined by the property taxes (and therefore wealth) of his neighbors is just abhorrent to me. We could go a long way towards eliminating the need for Affirmative Action if we tried to compensate for these kinds of social injustices.

EDIT: I'll also point out that I'm a huge hypocrite now, since I previously criticized the thread for deviating from its original purpose. But hey, tangential discussions are the spice of life, right?

"the white man's burdan", it's a classic poem. I hope you weren't serious filmxoxo, that poem epitomizes the pathetic excuses white men gave for their ruthless oppression. Damn, i'm starting to sound like a guilt-ridden liberal. Ever heard of social darwinism, survival of the fittest race?(j/k, but get over it already)

hhmmmm i wonder what political party the ppl against AA are in. Democrats should obviously be for AA and Republicans against...or at least thats normally so.

Or other/no affiliation, right? Talk about a false dichotomy...

If you follow the stereotype Republicans are normally middle class white ppl whereas Democrats are either extremely rich or poor

Really? To my understanding, Republicans are stereotypically rich or lower middle class (or just religious nutjobs :P), while Democrats are stereotypically poor or upper middle class.
