Affirmative Action

Does it apply to international students not applying for financial aid at elite universities (Ivies, etc)?

Like do we get the same AA benefits (or losses) as a student in the USA?

Anyone have any facts or evidence to answer this with?

Affirmative action applies to American, not international students. It is a way of redressing past discrimination due to race, ethnicity and sex, experienced historically within the American society.

As an international student you may be attractive to schools looking to diversify their student bodies. For example, someone from Africa or Asia may be attractive for a school whose student body is mostly white or Latino. But AA as such does not apply to non-Americans.

Well I have no evidence to back it up, but I have seen it happen a bit but in terms of SAT scores. Like students will super school records but not-so-special SAT scores (1980-2100) getting into Ivies. Dont know if it should be called AA though since I have seen Europeans and even Asians get into ivies with the same scores.

Lets just say your chances depends most on how the admission officer feels while he is reviewing your application.

Many students with so-so SAT scores get into the Ivies – either because they are athletes or come from enormously wealthy and powerful families (George Bush, some of the Kennedy children are good examples). That’s never been a secret with the Ivies. And that has absolutely NOTHING to do with Affirmative Action.

@katliamom,

I am talking about international students not Americans. I already know about the legacy and athlete issue. Although some international students do get in as athletes and by virtue of who they are (Royalty and such)- I am talking of the large subspace of students who come from irrelevant families.

In general, I have seen International students get into Ivies with just over 2100 into schools like Yale, Princeton e.t.c

However on CC you only see the superscores- 2300+ asking what are my chances e.t.c which kind of freak you out.

So someone with low stats probably wonders about his or her chances of getting into a school.
