I have a question about affirmative action.
I am 1/4 Nicaraguan (My grandmother is from Nicaragua). Am I considered to be an under represented minority at colleges? Even though I look white and I have blonde hair, I am for sure 1/4 Nicaraguan and can speak pretty good Spanish. Is 1/4 enough to get affirmative action?

of course not

haha

"Is 1/4 enough to get affirmative action?"

you say it like its something you can apply for...

I believe your parents have to be born in that country

You won't really need the affirmative action if you have competitive grades, test scores, and ec's, etc...

If you don't really associate yourself with the culture and are just putting yourself down as a minority to benefit from affermative action, you aren't very respectable

if you do, then put it down

my dad is from Morocco, but I'm white and didn't check off "African"

Foolish to depend solely on affirmative action for admission, especially with 1/4.

If 1/4 counted, then nearly all of the people in Ivies would have gotten affirmative action.

In other words, no.

I think you'll do fine without affirmative action. Just because someone gets aa doesn't mean that they'll get better grades than someone who doesn't. Good luck!

If you identify yourself as Nicaraguan, you should definitely put it down. If not, it's totally up to you on what you should do(but i'd have to say i'd recommend you not). Affirmative action can help out a lot to get an edge in admissions at elite colleges.

Put down both. I haven't seen any college apps that only allow for one choice, like the SAT.

I wouldn't put that down on you college app. What if the college you are applying to finds out and denies you admissions solely based on this one mess up. You never know. Some colleges require you send a picture of yourself with your application as well. And the interview would give you away.

what is your last name? If it looks hispanic (or whatever you'd call it) It might help you on your apps.

^LoL! If that's the case, I want my last name to be changed to Santiago or Ramos or Fez or Alverez or Garcia.

its sad that you feel you need to abuse the system...

1/4 is way to small. You sound like your exploiting AA and thats wrong for those who truly need the help.

what about 1/2?

Eh, I'd put down either 1/4 or 1/2.

1/2 is fair. You can also mark other and put Bi-racial.

If this guy doesn't acknowledge 1/4 of his race on his application, he's basically pretending his grandma didn't factor into his being. I'm shocked people would suggest that he shouldn't include his being part Hispanic on his application. Now that's not to say he should only mark down Hispanic as his race. Rather, he should mark down both.

I wouldn't think that 1/4 would get you anything. I heard that one or both of your parents have to be of that race to qualify. I could put down Native American because I'm 1/6 Indian but I don't because My last name is Sanchez so that would be a dead give away.

I think it's wrong for people who have never been looked at or viewed as a minority for most of their life automatically decide to become one just to impress an admission board.
