affirmative action

any thoughts?

Well, over on the regular "college admissions" forum, it's probably one of the most divisive issues around. As far as the context for Yale, it is committed to having a diverse freshman class -- whether it be different skills, academic accomplishments, athleticism, ethnicity, legacy, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, public/private school, rural/inner-city, 1st generation, artistry, entrepreneurship, child of development case, etc. etc. etc. Pick yours to argue for/against.

Personally, I applaud Yale's efforts to recruit among under-represented sub groups (like those I listed above). It's ability to successfully attract the best and brightest amongst these sub groups is one of its greatest strengths. And others seem to feel the same way -- thereby yielding Yale one of the artificial labels of "elite" colleges or even one of the "top ivies". If this were to change, I daresay Yale would suffer.

What are your thoughts GG?

I'm in favor of socio-economic affirmative action. Why should a rich black person be given an advantage over a poor white person?

I agree with mj93, even though I'm half hispanic, I still believe that poorer people should have just as much as an advantage as someone who could afford SAT and ACT tutors. By the way mj93, do u go to Yale or know anyone who does (if you don't mind me asking?) If so, is this person a minority?

Why, indeed, I do, GG123. No, he isn't--actually, he's an ORM: Jewish and from a Chicago suburb.

Is anyone not in favor of socio-economic affirmative action?

Well, if people agree or disagree with affirmative action, those who benefit from affirmative action should not be blamed for anything. It's the institutions who should take the credit/blame. Don't hate the players, hate the game.

I understand champion1one, but is your personal belief on affirmative action different than what you benifitted from? Or, is it that you were able to get credit from something, so you automatically like how the game is played?

I hate affirmative action with a burning passion.

I am low income like below 24,000 for 2 people. Before this year my mom and I were on welfare. However, I go to a NYC magnet school so does this take away from being low income/ how much wright does being low income even carry? any answers will be greatly appreciated.

You're the best kind of low income--you attend a good school, so (providing you're doing well there) there won't be the concerns about your ability to handle the academic rigors like there would be if you went to a bad high school.

Low income is a tip, not a hook, if you're up on college admissions lingo.

I am doing ok a.k.a a 92 average. One term when my aunt had cancer brought it down from a 93. Also my test scores include a 35 ACT and 2 800 Sat 2's. Does this really show academic potential?

What's your class rank and how difficult has your curriculum been? Obviously, you go to a great high school, so that helps.

Test scores are good, but your transcript is the most important item. I don't have a sense what your 92 means right now.

Wouldn't explain too much about aunt. Could come across as making excuses and it didn't change your average that much. Also wouldn't state that dad was abusive unless you can do it the "right" way. If it looks like you're seeking charity, it's no good.

Yea I am not going to cry about it but rather show the determination and inspiration that my mom gave me to get past all that and suceed and go to college. I am alos not going to write too much about my aunt's cancer. It will probably be like one sentence in my counselor's rec. Our school doesn't rank so I have no idea what that 92 means. The mean gpa for someone to go to yale from our school is a 94.5 so I do fall way short of that.

Would showing how I persever and kept a cheerful attitude for the most part besides my situation in a guidance rec show maturity? I am also my mother's support system. Should nay of this be included in a rec?

I like the idea of someone else explaining your situation. They can go into as much detail as they want.

I feel the same. But I think racial affirmative action is completely unfair to caucasians and asians alike.

My essays are going to be about how someone at the hospital where I worked at inspired me to want to be a neurosurgeon and participate in neurosience research. Does this sound good for the 150 word extracircular short answer?

So what do you think my chances at Yale are?

I think the 94.5 gives you the answer, but it doesn't mean that you shouldn't apply.

Princeton is known to be a little more responsive to special circumstances and to accept people with 90 to 93 gpa's. Is my shot at Princeton greater or at least semi decent?
