Affirmative Action

Hi, I'm just wondering about Affirmative Action. I'm been reading that's it's appearently illegal. But I feel that to say that universities that do not discrimate against race and gender is niave. I'm just wondering, is this a "under the table" process that's working everywhere?

Before this thread deviates into disaster and pointless argumentation-

It is illegal (I believe) in one or two states: [Affirmative action in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Affirmative action in the United States - Wikipedia)

As an FYI affirmative action is not discrimination against whites/men. It’s a level to minorities/women- white people have the leg up already: several older processes were strictly geared towards white people, so the idea is that AA helps others get the same chance. [Personally, I’ve been dying to buy this one book about when Affirmative Action was for whites, Ie. the G.I. Bills that helped out more white soldiers than others, etc.]

It’s possible that in states where its not supposed to be done, its thought of anyways.

Private college may choose their students any way they like.

Public universities are barred from using affirmative action, but they typically manage to retain certain ethnic groups through indirect procedures. Private universities are not restricted from implementing affirmative action. In other words, it is something that explicitly occurs at private universities and subtly occurs at public universities, so odds are it is something you may face and be affected by during college admissions.

We already have a discussion about race and college admissions which covers AA pretty thoroughly.

THAT’s an understatement!
