Is it somewhat true that Ivy league schools are now looking to have more 'balanced' classes and looking to accept more well-rounded (as in athletics, maybe not collegiate though), smart, southern, affluent males?
I heard this in a discussion but I didn't know if it held any validity.
Thoughts?

Princeton has been known as the Univ. of Virginia of the North for decades now…

Bump
Any more opinions?

Every Ivy school tries to build a diverse and balanced class, and each university will want a certain number of white Southern males. I doubt the desired fraction of each class that white Southern males are supposed to fill has changed significantly over the last decade or two, so I doubt a given white southern male has a noticeably better or worse chance at admission than he would have in any other fairly recent year. I don’t think universities are allowed to take income into account in admissions decisions.

People will say that Princeton in particular has a more southern feel than the other Ivy schools, and there is definitely a significant southern social contingent at Princeton. I have not visited any other Ivy schools long enough to make any social comparisons, though.

Here are the numbers from recent Common Data Set forms for the Ivies and Stanford.

% White----% International — School

64%–8%-----Cornell
61%–7%-----Dartmouth
60%–8%-----Brown
59%–9%-----Yale
58%–10%----Harvard, Penn, Princeton
57%–10%----Columbia
45%–7%-----Stanford

Harvard, Penn and Princeton are at the lower end of the Ivies in terms of white enrollment, or, to put it another way, are second highest in the Ivies in terms of ethnic diversity. Stanford has a huge Asian-American population reflecting, in large part, the ethnic makeup of its home state of California. On the other hand, it has a slightly lower international population.

I agree with PtonGrad2000 that if you look at the numbers, Princeton is actually more diverse than you would think.

I find that certain highly visible eating clubs with the mentioned affiliations (read: Cottage) can leave a perception that there are a lot of southern white jocks. It can look that way when you visit or hang out on a Saturday night, but overall, the numbers don’t support it.
