Affordable And Respected Universities In New York City?

A little backstory: Up until a week ago, I was all set to attend Pace University in Manhattan. I even went to orientation
(I’m from Nashville so this was a bit of an ordeal) and got my ID, schedule, and made plenty of friends. The day I get back, my dad tells me it’s just not going to work out financially and I need to find somewhere more affordable. Now, I’m going to University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and I’m pretty upset. I’ve accepted the fact that this is the best thing for me financially, but I have no intention of finishing my degree in Chattanooga. It’s not a great place for my intended major, marketing, and I want to transfer to somewhere in New York after two years or maybe even after I get my bachelors degree.
For this to happen, I need to find a respected school that is reasonably priced. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance

I’m sorry it fell through so last minute. You can look into the CUNY schools, which are the public NYC schools. Hunter or Baruch or Queens might be good for you, but you should be aware there isn’t a lot of campus life, if that’s what you’re looking for.

I was just in NYC a few weeks ago with my daughter to look at schools. I don’t know if we are going to be able to swing it financially, but applications just opened today, so she is starting to work on those.

We really liked Hofstra, Pace, and NYU. I don’t see any way that we could possibly manage NYU because they are historically stingy with aid, but I figure it’s still worth having my daughter apply. The surprise was that my daughter actually liked Hofstra best of all the campuses she looked at. It’s a 45 minute train ride out from Manhattan, but it’s a nice train ride, not like doing 45 minutes on the subway. And the train takes you right into Penn Station, so you will be right in the heart of the area that you need to get to.

For out-of-state, the CUNYs aren’t really any less expensive than the privates and the privates are likely to have a bigger budget for aid.

I’m in the same boat as you are. I know I want to go to college in NYC. Pace seems ideal but using their NPC I would still pay 28,000. Good luck to you.

As a Hofstra student, I agree with awintx. The 45 minute train right separating Hofstra from Manhattan is actually very important to me, because that means that the campus life is that much more vibrant. Because we are not a city school, there are tons of activities going on on-campus, and there are over 200 clubs to participate in. Events are happening all the time, and residential life is great. The campus is also beautiful, which isn’t something that you’re going to see in city schools. I would suggest checking out Hofstra first and seeing how affordable it is for you personally (scholarships here are great!) and think about transferring. Coming to Hofstra, personally, was the best decision I have ever made.
