African American Junior

LOL, I was hoping this title would get me some attention

I was wondering if ya'll could tell me whether or not I have a good mix of reaches, safeties and matches. I've tried counselor-o-matic and it keeps telling me I have no reaches which is complete BS. I guess when it sees a black guy with over a 1300 SAT it goes haywire. (j/k)

GPA: 3.99 (95.6/100) Class Rank: 6/375

I want to major in political science/ international relations and eventually I'd like to go to law school with a focus in international law. Also, I would like schools with really good choral groups.

Georgetown-Reach
Princeton-Reach
Brown-Reach
UVA-Reach
College of William and Mary- Low Reach/High Match
UNC-Chapell Hill- Match
Boston University- Match
Lehigh- Match
New College of Florida- Match
UGA-Safety
Oxford College(Emory)-Safety

With your stats and being an AA, none of your choices are really that much of a reach, except for possibly P. Everyone will tell you to raise your SAT scores, but you already know that. What you want to look for is significant financial rewards (i.e. full or nearly full ride). You are the kind of diversity candidate that colleges claim to be looking for, so make sure that they re$pect your accomplishments.

Even though undergraduate admission becomes more competitive every year, you can positively play the URM card along with your impressive stats to get where and you want. Good luck!

thanks, so you really don't think that Brown and Georgetown are reaches....even with my URM status I'm not to sure about those...

Brown, Georgetown and Princeton are reaches -- for you and for virtually everyone.

New College is a a safety. You clearly meet their admissions standards, plus they are desperate to have African Americans. I think they only have about 3 African Americans out of about 650 students. That's not for lack of trying to attract black students. It's just that most black students who qualify for admission don't want to go to a tiny overwhelmingly white school in an overwhelmingly wealthy, white city. The school also lacks major sports teams, which is another reason why so few black students apply. In addition, the black students who might be interested tend to be creamed off by other, better known, more diverse colleges.

Since you anticipate being a National Achievement Scholar, I suggest that you also check out universities like Fordham, FSU, U Florida, American University, Howard, and Florida A&M U, which are among the colleges giving excellent merit aid to National Achievement Scholars.

UNC is a match only if you apply EA or if you're from NC.

I'm planning on applying EA but I'm from georgia. I thought that it would be a saftey though because the avg. SAT is only around a 1270 or so. Am I missing something here?

not for out of state students. head over to the board and look at all the kids with 1400+ SAT who were rejected / deferred.

ick...I might need to move....
Also, I think Im going to add American to my list so would they be a safety as well?

yeah. you'd probably get a scholarship of some kind too.

Princeton accepts ACT results in place of SAT I scores only. You are still required to take 3 SAT II subjects. If you are writing the AP US History exam in May, then you should be able to score 700+ in SAT II US History in June, given your background. You should also take the SAT II Math IIC in June since you are in "gifted precalc". The exam is fairly easy if you have a strong precalc foundation.

Check out each school's website and look at the requirements for 2006, when they become available.

Good luck!

Yea, I was planning on taking math 2c, us history and physics. I wish I had taken the world history test last year considering I got a 5 on the AP exam.

Ok, if I recieve mail from a college stating "Your PSAT scores and high school record lead us to believe that you may recieve recognition in the National Acheivement Scholarship Program" then does that mean that they know something I don't????

I got that too..today from Carleton College.

thanks for ruining it!....lol just kidding
Newayz, can I get anymore repsonses on my reach/match/safety list?

....bump bump

I love NCF, and got in. lol. My stats aren't far from your's, and I think they will accept you because of your stats and race. They do want more blacks. I visited the campus about a year ago and really liked it. It is pretty. But I did not see a whole lot of diversity, so they will probably give you a good scholarship.
Nothing beats a public school's tuition... lol, even for out-of-state.

You might also want to check out Wesleyan U. They are on the hunt for blacks too, because few have been applying in recent years. My mom interviews for them and they sent her a notice about trying to recruit more "diverse" students... you would have a good chance there.

William and Mary, UVa, UNCCH, and Lehigh are yucky. That's all I'll say about those. Otherwise, the list looks good.

The cutoff for National Achievement scholar usually is about a 190. More than likely, you will be a National Achievement scholar.

You will get the notice about semifinalist next fall, and as long as you keep your grades up and send in the required paperwork (transcript, copy of your SAT I, essay, recommendation from GC), you'll make finalist.

Whether you get a scholarship depends on where you apply and there also is a luck factor in that companies pick students depending mainly on, I think, choice of major, your career interests and possibly whether your parents work for the company.

The cutoff for National Merit Commended is usually around 200, 201. You will not be National Merit commended or a National Merit Scholar.

im gonna major the same exact things!! poli sci/international relations and then on to good ol international law - - - - lol it cough my attention had to say it! o but good luck!

Tufts and George Washington are good for international relations/poli sci.
U Maryland also is good in those areas and may proportionately have more African American professors than do other mainstream universities. Some also are in the poli sci dept.

Tufts has the best IR program in the nation, and I think you'd still be a strong candidate. Johns Hopkins has a strong program as well.
