What can a BA in African-American Studies prepare you for in grad school?

You could probably switch to similar or somewhat related fields with relative ease, such as sociology or perhaps English. It's probably one of if not the best preparations for studying African-American studies :), but if you decide that you would rather studying something else more later, then majoring in AA studiens probably will not prevent you given that you have some knowledge of the other subject and have great potential as a contributer to that subject, unless it's a complete change such as engineering or chemistry. If it is a completely different field, and you have no knowledge of it, your chances of being admitted are probably greatly hurt. If you switch to something such as Englihs or Soc, it's possible that the department would want you to have taken a few intro classes to familiarize yourself with the subject, or they will have you take them when you're a grad student there. Could having no knowledge of the field hurt your admissions chances? Quite possibly, but I don't know.

I had thought about grad school for African-American Studies, but I have no research experience and apparently not good in it (constantly denied undergrad research grants because my proposals are not good). Therefore, I may have to find a job in the real world that would applly what I've learned from the major.

You do not need research experience, although it is surely quite helpful. Get professors to review your proposals. Get your department to help you succeed! If you want to go to grad school, do your best to, but if you do not, obviously don't go.
