Hi Everyone I was just wondering what the average for African Americans is on the ACT

I scored:

Reading: 31
Math: 25
English:28
Science:23
Composite: 27

I am applying to an array of colleges including Ivy's

My list of colleges are:

American
University of Delaware
Dartmouth
University of Virginia
George Washington University
Princeton
Barnard College
Brown
Duke
Columbia
Georgetown
Johns Hopkins
Emory
Trinity

I am in National Honor Society, I volunteer, I have been in multiple bands through stressful auditioning processes and my essays are written very well!!

I was wondering if anyone knew if my chances of getting into some of the top schools on my list are strong because I am an African American girl who is pushing really really hard. Is it enough? Thanks for your help!!!

P.S. I also received a 630 on my SAT subject test II (Literature)

and a 590 on Biology (i will be retaking that in January).

Are there any other African Americas trying for some of the same schools? If so what are your scores?

I think being a minority will help, but it won’t make up for those low scores

dont count on your ethnicity to get you in, go for the average student stats of those schools.

I have a friend (African-American) who got into Emory with a 26 ACT.
It’s all about being well-rounded

Yes I am deffinently not counting on my ethnicity to get in. I am just wondering what scores others of my ethnicity are getting

Out of all the ones you are applying to, I only applied to duke. I got into vanderbilt ED and i’m an african american female! i hope this helps.

english: 34
reading: 28
math: 28
science: 27
composite: 29

EC: cheerleading, lacrosse, symphonic band, national honor society president, class officer (historian), writing team, full orchestra, instrumentalist for chorus, yearbook editor

I’m also applied to miami of ohio, unc chapel hill, college of william & mary, university of ky (i live in ky), centre, and duke

I have about 400 hours in volunteering and i am a coca cola semifinalist!!
i have also won some other awards but i won’t go into great detail

i’m sure you have a great chance!
i hope this helps! good luck!

cmlatt01- Thank you soo much for your input and congratulations on all your accomplishments!!! I wish the very best for both of us :)

I’m African American and I got

31 Composite
33 Math
33 Science
29 Reading
27 English(I love reading but those long passages are daunting)

This was my first time and I’m a junior. I’m not sure if being a minority made a difference on my scores though.

If you want to compare yourself to other African Americans there is a forum for it
[African-American Students - College Confidential](African-American Students - College Confidential Forums)
You’ll notice that they are accepted with a few less points. It’s a nice boost but you still need good scores.

Thank you therazor302 that was exactly what I was looking for!!!

not to be rude, but instead of asking how your scores compare to that of your race, you should be asking yoursef how you can improve your scores so that you wont have to wonder whether or not you were admitted based on your race or based on your qualifications.

I don’t understand the point of this thread.

It really saddens me when I see minorities getting their free ride based not on merit, but on race.

Free?! I want free!

uh the point of the thread is exactly as it states, stop trying to cause conflict

^I’m not sure anyone’s actually trying to cause conflict. She basically posted a “chance me” thread in the ACT section, with the exception that she would be compared only to other African-Americans…something that’s confusing to some and annoying to others.

well if its confusing or annoying, then don’t post on it
i don’t see a problem with what she’s asking.

No problem, this forum helped me a ton as well.

To all you people complaining about people getting on based on race, not merit: maybe its because our grandparents didn’t get their 40 acres and a mule.

I do understand why some of you may be upset, but you have to try to see it in some of our shoes. As an african-american female, I have had to work twice as hard to earn the scores and education that most of you all receive because of what I am offered. And it’s not like African-americans are getting into Harvard with 1500s! The scores are SLIGHTLY lower, not by 500 points!!

To the person who started this thread: I feel you. However, you really should be comparing your scores to those of the general population of college applicants, not just those in your own race or ethnicity. Not only is it a tad more appropriate, but it will also give you more of an accurate idea of whether or not your application data is high enough to be accepted.

Honestly, it’s all love. I’m just speaking the truth. I wish you all the best of luck in all of your college endeavors!

I’m trying to get into some of the ivy’s as well. I got a 29 on the ACT the first time and a 2010. I’m trying to get a 34 but the science section saturday was ridiculous lol
