African American's Chances at Top Colleges

Thanks glee12! I will be working ever so hard on getting them SAT scores up I see. I’ll try for the 2000+

FYI…Maryland - College Park is NOT a safety, although I trust you’d be admitted.

thanks, Aw man…in my head I was like “aiighht I got a safety!” and then I see this lol.Ok, helpful reality check, I’ll be doing research

Chancing back: with higher standardized test scores, none of these schools will be beyond a low reach. Your EC’s definitely stand out. You’re doing quite a few things; that’s great if you’re deeply involved in them (I have no idea), but I’d say it’s better to have depth than breadth.
I only recently found out that the SAT has a finite list of vocab words that they’ll use, and you could look them all up beforehand and study them. As for the other sections, just practice. I know that essays are marked higher if they are longer and if they include some really obscure words. If you have those words ready before you take the test, you could definitely improve your score. Take as many practice math SATs as you can, and your scores are bound to increase considerably. Good luck!

Thanks @ostrich190!

You have really good credentials and the fact that you’re self studying for APs shows initiative. The only thing I can say is try to get your SAT score up and maybe take some subject tests. Good luck!!

thanks @AnImpAffliction‌. anyone else???

ill chance back…bump…

also, some specifics such as why and why not, or which school would be the best choice, (im interested in business and will need aid) would help so much!

And this is exactly why I thought the thread title is objectifying yourself. You might asked to be chanced and mention that you are AA, But just making that a title seems a bit objectifying to a reader that is glancing through.
Being AA does not necessarily increase your chances in most school. there maybe other AA students and students of other races with better grades and accomplishment, and they may likely be considered over you.
So do not even use the fact that you are AA, as a plus sign for admissions, especially at selective colleges.
Just my humble opinion.
Best of luck to you.

thanks @ccco2018‌ , and yea I see what you mean. So thus ignoring that aspect of my application, what would you say are my chances for these schools?

Bump… :/

Putting you in perspective with the rest of the applicants, I say your chances are a MATCH in the Public schools you listed, and a “HIGH REACH” in the Private schools, since they are all very selective schools. Even for the public schools, with that SAT scores, you might not get a lot of scholarships or grants especially UT AUSTIN.

I will add that, since you are in IVORY Coast, your major competitions will also include international students from that region - yes a bit unfair since you should strictly be in the same pool as US citizens, but you are taking the same curriculum that students in your region are, and most schools, though you will enjoy the privileges of a US citizen like FAFSA and other scholarships should you get accepted, will put you in the pool of International applicants, and that can be quite challenging. This is because most of these international students pull in just about perfect TEST SCORES & GPA’S. Therefore, when it comes to achievements, if their scores and extracurriculars are more impressive than yours, and you apply to a school that have policies of certain QUOTAS from certain regions, then you know how competitive that can be.

I would say; work on improving your SAT or ACT if you can, more AP’s if you can, but definitely volunteer more, and initiate some more leadership roles - be it student government, clubs, community services, etc. I should also ask; If UND, EMORY & GEORGETOWN are on your list… why not add few IVY’s to the mix, and perhaps VANDY as well? Again you may never know until you try.
In all, do all you can, apply broadly and wait for the outcome.
Best of luck to you.

Thanks and very very helpful @ccco2018 . By international competition, did you mean from Ivory Coast or all internationals???
And I’m considering adding Cornell to the list, if I can get my SAT scores up. ugh these SAT’s…

Thanks for the chance! URM status should help, as should your interesting back story, which will excuse your lack of APs and difficult EC situation. Regardless of your inability to participate in ECs, your ECs are impressive if not outstanding, especially your athletic achievements. You will definitely need to work on bringing your SAT up, so make sure to work on that.
Chances:
Lehigh University - Match/High Match

Thanks alot @crazyfrog821‌ ! I’ll be sure to work on those darned SAT’s! Are you sure your chance isn’t too generous though?

You seem like you’ve got thing under control, If i were you, i’d make sure essays are strong - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1639715-chances-for-stanford-rea-will-chance-back.html#latest</a> chance me please?

thanks @nsoods‌

Yes, both in Ivory Coast and the surrounding region, depending on how schools combine countries by region or just individual countries.
Yep Cornell is great. Try ACT as-well even if you do increase your SAT scores, Some students have reported in doing better in one test over the other. Plus you mentioned not knowing if you can do the subject test, which is very recommended, if not mandatory for the selective schools.
Best of luck to you.

thanks again @ccco2018‌ !
