I am seriously considering joining the AFROTC program and applying for their scholarship program. I understand that they pay for approx. 18,000 towards undergraduate education. I am a Journalism major with interest in climatology as well as mandarin chinese. Does anyone have experience with the detachment at Maryland, or any advice? Thanks

Eyyjordan: Send a PM to Bulletandpima, her son is in AFROTC @ Maryland. My son is a freshman in NROTC and his roommate is AFROTC, so I can put you in touch with them if you want to talk to some freshmen about their experience (not on CC so send me your email address and I’ll pass it along to them).

DS is on the full ride with the AFROTC det…2nd generation AFROTC UMD, so obviously we feel very strong about that det. I am assuming you are IS because you are speaking about the 18K. The AFROTC scholarships are competitive and 85% go to technical degrees.

The det is very active, they have 2 AF fraternities, Honor and Arnie Air. They typically have a dining in and a dining out every yr. On top of that they have things about 1x a month…last month they did Relay for Life Run. They meet every Thursday (or maybe it’s every other Thursday) night for social purposes.

If you go on a tour of UMD, make sure you call ahead to the det and set up an appointment to talk to them. They are located in Cole Field House. You will also be able to meet cadets there, since some will hang there between classes.

As far as getting your career afterwards, alot has to do with your AFOQT and your gpa. Also being involved within the det helps for command support.

Good Luck…AIM HIGH…ABOVE ALL!

I’m a Freshman in the Det. myself. So far I’ve been loving it, best decision of college so far to join it. The cadre are all very like able and the people you meet are unlike any friends you’ll make outside the program. If you have questions send a PM for my email but as a word of advice I’d say to try to do Mandarin Chinese as a major or double major if you think you can handle it. Doing so you can apply for the Express Scholarship which means that as long as you’re qualified you get the scholarship without having to be considered by a board and if you’re on scholarship taking a high demand language class the Air Force will actually increase the stipend they send you. I’m a Chinese and International Business double major myself so if you’d need help I’d be more than willing to help out a wingmen.

These responses have been really helpful. I am visiting the University Dec 4th-9th. I already set up a meeting for while I am there. I was considering a double major with Chinese, so that is great news.

and I am actually out of state from California, but transferring for the Spring from Arizona State University. I was accepted for the fall of 2009, but didn’t think i would be able to afford the OOS tuition costs. That is why I am considering AFROTC. I also figured that they could help me with my interest in Meteorology and Chinese.

eyyjordan,

Bullet here. Pima’s other half, and the guy who went through AFROTC at Md back when the AF was still only flying zeppelins! Feel free to PM myself or Pima if you have any questions about ROTC or Md. More importantly, PM me if you want some words or advise about the AF. Remember, the scholarship is just the beginning, you’ll be one of the lucky ones with a job waiting for you when you get out…

I’m in AFROTC right now, and I was in the AF for 8 years prior to this. Pm me if you have any questions.
