Hey, I am currently a freshmen mechanical engineering major and have had an interest in joining the afrotc, and eventually being an engineer in the air force. My only concern is possible deployment. Anyone know if the air force deploys iits engineers to fight in the front line?

you are a soldier before you are anything else so the answer would be yes

check out military.com for those sort of questions

i wouldnt worry about that.

Hey. I'm a cadet at USAFA - here's what I've heard from my engineering professors:

Engineers do deploy. RED HORSE and other Civil E. units probably spend the most time overseas. Mechanical engineering is a pretty wide field, especially in the AF, so your future career would depend largely on your specialty. Regardless of your exact occupation, however, deployment is always a possibility. The USAF is an expeditionary force, but as an engineer, you probably wouldn't get a phone call at 2 AM telling you to be on a C-130 in an hour.

The bottom line is that engineers may deploy, though it may be infrequently as a mechanical engineer and you probably wouldn't be on the front lines. I would think that a post in the UAE, Qatar, or Kuwait would be much more likely.

If you've got any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask. I love what I've seen of the AF so far, and would definitely recommend a career as a USAF officer. Best of luck with whatever you decide.
