Hey Guys,

So I'm a newbie on CC but have been a lurker for years. I know that ppl on this forum are very knowledgable so I wanted some honest opinions on my chances for Haas. I just finished freshman yr btw.

So first semester, I had all As except a C+ in Math 16A :( I had taken Econ 1 the summer before college and received an A-. Additionally, my prereqs grades this semester were an A- in UGBA 10 and a B+ in Math 16B ( I worked extremely hard and had an A before the final, but the final killed me. I did show considerable improvement from Math 16A which I hope Haas will view favorably)
I am taking Stats 21 and and Econ 100A next semester in addition to 2 breadths. My exact GPA currently is a 3.6

I know my GPA is below average, and i can say that in terms of extracurriculars, I feel I am quite above average. i am extremely involved in the Berkeley community and a part of several organizations and have leadership roles. I also had an internship last summer, this spring, and have another one this summer. I am projecting my final GPA, including next fall, to hover between a 3.6-3.7, and seeing everything, I would like you guys to tell me whether I am competitive for Haas and what my chances are.

Additionally, I have also heard that Math is the least importnat pre-req for Haas admissions and that basically only Econ, Stats and UGBA hold weight. Is that really true, or can my math grade have me rejected? :(
Thank you, and please chance me!

I’d say you still have a good shot. It will probably depend on how well you can engage the application readers with your extracurricular activities and the depth of your internship. I’d encourage you to reconsider taking Econ 100A next semester; you may want to take Econ 100B instead (there’s less math in 100B, making it easier to understand the economics) or leave either of those classes until your spring semester and just try to take easier classes in the fall to boost your GPA. I haven’t heard the rumor about math vs. stats/econ/UGBA and my guess is that all pre-requisites hold equal weight, while UGBA 10 may hold a little more.

the only way ugba 10 holds more weight than the other prereqs is in trying to back up that you really want to stick with business as your major.

(reasoning: how can you say you are serious about pursuing business but not have taken at least 1 ugba class by the time haas applications are out?)

@basketballkid124 Thanks, that makes me feel better! I will definitely try to emphasize my ECs in my essay. And yeah, I actually AM taking econ100b, lol. I had initially signed up for 100A but just changed it last week, so I made a typo.

@crowslayer91 Yeah, that makes sense and I really hope that UGBA certainly holds more weight than the other prereqs!

^ it doesn’t hold more weight in any quantitative measure. as i said, it only helps to substantiate any claims about how much you “love business” and all the great things you plan to do with your haas degree
