After Appointment Senior Year Classes: Drop or Don't Drop a Class?

Hi there, I recently received my full offer of appointment to the United States Naval Academy in early February 2014. I'm currently enrolled in 5 AP's (Calc BC, Physics B, Literature, US Government, and Computer Science). I received straight A's first semester, but this semester my AP Computer Science grade is beginning to wilt. I have also been wishing for a free period to catch up on extra study time. My high school lists AP Computer Science as an elective as well. I was wondering if my Appointment status to the USNA would be hindered if I happened to drop AP Computer Science? It would not show up as "failed" if the class were dropped. Thanks.

Hmmm…I suggest that maybe you contact USNA and ask them for yourself. I doubt that it would kill you, considering you’ve taken (I assume) many other AP classes and are currently in a bunch of others, combined with the fact that it is second semester senior year. Having 5 AP classes for senior year instead of 4 wasn’t the reason why you were appointed.

When you say your “AP Computer Science grade is beginning to wilt”, what does that translate into as far as an actual grade? If it will be a C or higher…don’t worry about it. The USNA won’t rescind your appointment because of a C. Lower than a C then drop the class.

Thank you aglages. When I mean wilt, it’s dropping to a mid-B but it has the potential to drop even further in the near future. I am also considering dropping because I want to free up an extra study period to brush up on chemistry and other subjects I haven’t covered since last year. If dropped, it merely appear as if I never enrolled in the class second semester. My BGO says not to worry, and I trust his advice, I’m just trying to be double-sure that this is the right route to take. Thanks.
