After getting a C, i'm not sure where i can go.. :(

help out a sister! i'm going to be a senior this year and i have one C on my transcript and it is unfortunately from junior year. it has damaged a lot of my hopes of getting into certain colleges. my gpa is 3.64 unweighted. half of my B's are from freshman year and the C i got was from ap english. but besides this C i have A's in every other subject.

i intend to major in something math and chemistry related. i am not sure though.

i'd appreciate suggestions of GOOD FIT schools for me, schools that i am almost guaranteed getting into that also have some name prestige (parents -__-) thanks you!

btw. i am a very adaptable person, i like just about everywhere i go (except for ghetto places) i'm outgoing and very sociable with great leadership qualities. i basically want to go somewhere that also emphasizes leadership :D

i'm chinese... :( with high math SATs and lower Verbal ones..

ur in good shape, u shouldnt be worrying.
I dont know much about u as u didnt even list what area of the country u do and dont want to go.
Anyways here are schools u have chances in (ill list safe, match, reach):

Safety:
- Purdue
- Indiana
- Virginia Tech
- U Mass (Amherst)
Match:
- Ohio State (Match/safety)
- Rutgers
- Goergia
- South Carolina
- NC State
- Florida State
Reach:
- Penn State: reach mayby high match
- Boston U (Low reach)
- Miami (Low Reach)
- George Washington (low reach)
- Georgia Tech: If in state (low reach) otherwise far reach
- Florida: if In State (match/reach) otherwise solid reach

Anyways, all the schools have good names. They are all Tier 1 schools. I also looked for many schools that were Tier 1 research institutions according to Carnegie Foundation. all the reaches and most of the others are so either of those are good choices.
For ur major I would suggest Purdue, GA tech, VTech.

What's your SAT/ACT scores?

I'd suggest trying UMich (if you have good ACT/SAT; they drop your freshman year, so that should help your GPA).

Is it possible that the C could be changed after the score comes in? At my school, certain grades can be changed if you score well enough on the exam (e.g. for APUSH, you can get an A- if you get a 4, an A if you get a 5).

^ I wish my school had that policy

Dude, you are going to be OK :D OK? (Out of curiosity, what are you SATs? PM me if you don't want to post them here).

I had a low GPA (3.26), two C's junior year, and I got into 8 out of the 10 schools I applied. (I am attending Bryn Mawr next year).

Read Colleges that Change Lives by Loren Pope. All schools in there will accept students with a mix of A's and B's, even less (and yes, those with a few C's!). I applied to a bunch of those colleges and they gave me moneeyyy. So apply if you want to stay debt free.

Also, Washington Monthly (WM) rated a bunch of colleges and universities on different criteria than US News and World Report:
The first question we asked was, what does America need from its universities? From this starting point, we came up with three central criteria: Universities should be engines of social mobility, they should produce the academic minds and scientific research that advance knowledge and drive economic growth, and they should inculcate and encourage an ethic of service.
It would seem that these colleges place an emphasis on leadership.
i'm retaking the SAT in october..

C/R 630
Writing 640
Math 780

i must boost c/r and writing!!!

i have to re-take sat physics test.. i messed up in june...
math 2c: 720 (i'm retaking this)

i might take u.s. history

i had a total of 15 semesters of honors/AP courses from the start of my freshman year until the end of my junior year.

let's just say my grades were lowest in freshman year, but i had no C's until this semester.. (2nd sem junior year: 5A's 1 C)

"sigh".. my ambitions are way too high.. imagine... i wanted to go for CMC.. but it seems so impossible now

i'm also considering scripps..

That is a TON of AP classes, man. Yeah, try to work on the SATs; the thing that helped me the most (which might not work for you) is that I have always been a reader. Try reading books all the time, just random ones that you know you'll enjoy. It might not teach you all the vocabulary you need to know but it will definitely make you more familiar with the English language. I especially condone Harry Potter and related series for this exercise :D

If the SAT doesn't work out for you (or even if you're not sure it will) take the ACT w/ Writing. At Bryn Mawr, I had to have either SAT I + 2 SAT II's or the ACT w/ Writing, and since no one had encouraged me to take the SAT II's, I had to do the ACT. My ACT score was comparable to my SAT score, but most people I have talked to find one test easier than the other.

acarta07,

i forgot to mention that i'm probably not doing engineering.. i might consider pre-pharm or something like that..

oh yea.... i have a friend going to bryn mawr! hope you like it.. :D

yea.. i'm considering doing the ACT in sept. and if i do well.. screw the SAT in october.. or should i still take it?

Hm, Scripps...I'm not familiar with California schools, but I've got this big ol' book in front of me (Peterson's Four Year Colleges) with a bunch of stats in it, so I'll quote you a few:

Scripps:

49% of applicants admitted
Average HS GPA: 4.0
SAT verbal scores over 600: 91%
SAT verbal over 700: 40%
SAT math over 600: 80%
SAT math over 700: 27%
ACT scores over 24: 96%
ACT scores over 30: 42%

Hm well, it seems as if you are at a bit of a disadvantage when it comes to GPA and SAT verbal, but at an advantage for math. I'd say Scripps is probably a fit/reach for you, but I'm not positive. What ECs do you have?

Claremont McKenna College:

22% of applicants admitted
Average HS GPA: 3.91
SAT verbal over 600: 87%
SAT verbal over 700: 46%
SAT math over 600: 90%
SAT math over 700: 54%
ACT scores over 24: 98%
ACT scores over 30: 53%

Based on their admittance rate, CMC is definitely a reach. If we add your stats to who you are as a person and how you could come across in your application I think you've got pretty good chances at Scripps.

Edit: definitely still take the SAT. You never know what could happen.

Yeah I hope I enjoy Bryn Mawr too :D Thanks for the well wishes.

i have quite a bit of ExtraCurr.

-i'm in colorguard and i have been my entire high school career.. this is big to me because it takes up nearly 25 hours a week sometimes and i am in the running for head leader. we placed 3rd in the WORLDD at wgi championships 2 year in a row, so that's good rep for us.. YAY. we're marching in rose parade 2008.

-i've played piano practically all my life.. nuff said
-i participate in 3 clubs: Leo Club (a mini version of lions) and i am the publicity commissioner, Music Mentors (an organization dedicated to helping middle school kids get better on their instruments), and ALLIES (a christian club at our school) i'm a leaderfor this too.

and honestly.. i enjoy everything i do.. even though my business might have costed me that C in ap english.. :(

your SAT scores are hell decent! Stop worrying.

juggly_head777, if you telepathically send me your math skills, I'll telepathically send you my English skills.

LOL.. dude. that would be frikkin awesome. -_-

lmao then you both can telepathically send me both skills! :P

anyways.. will my EC's help me... this lost cause gpa wise..

bump bump bump
