after I got deferred...what now?

so i just got deferred from my ED school and was wondering what "addtional information" I could send to gain me another chance in its RD round.
I never mentioned I play piano/sing in chorus/dance in my ED application stuff because I'm not professional at any of those. But now my counselor (well...i'm an international student and my school doesn't really have a counselor) is telling me how I should send a tape of me playing piano to the college. Btw I'm going to major in math/engineering so I'm thinking maybe arts will make me look a little special? Or if I'm not professional, is this tape going to hurt me cause it annoys the AO?
What other materials are you sending to colleges after you got deferred?
Thank you so much for your help! (especially when i don't have a "counselor")

If you consider something that you possess a talent, it won’t hurt you to send something that shows your dedication to that talent. If you’re good at piano, and you’re passionate about it, a small tape of you playing shouldn’t hurt you. As long as the quality is fine and you are at least above average at your talents, it should help you.

Just think about it this way. If a typical stranger wouldn’t mind watching that tape, then the admissions office will be fine with it.

Good luck!

Thank you! Well yeah…I think I’m above average :P

Then it can’t hurt you. If anything, it might show your dedication to said activity, and extracurriculars are always a part of the holistic view that most universities will have when they look at applicants.

That was obviously a mistake on your part because colleges specifically ask about ECs. Don’t send in a tape; nobody in admissions wants to watch it, they’re busy reviewing apps. Do update your app to mention the ECs you left out the first time around.

^ Mikemac, what you write is generally true, but not true of LACs or small Unis… they tend to actually look at everything sent to them.

Agree with Mikemac. Don’t send in supplementary tapes and materials unless you possess unusual talent (which generally means you are at the professional level…). Although like Dunnin said, this may depend on the school you were deferred at.

well…I already put in 8 ECs and my counselor suggested me not to fill in everything because that makes me seems too…ummm…not focused? But yea thank you for the suggestion, I will email the AO and update

I got deferred from a top LAC…but I still shouldn’t send not professional ones?

If you have had formal training and have performed your talents in a significant venue, then I’d send a tape. Otherwise, sending in random material after the fact might seem a little desperate.
