My S has admission in at least 4 top schools and is waitlisted at Caltech. That decision comes past the May 1st deadline. We are trying to figure out what to do. He wants to visit the campuses, but being the co-captain of a World championship team and having exams starting early May, he is on a 7 day a week schedule. We are also doing an analysis of the programs and the aid.

So we were considering double depositing at some schools, at least till the end of May when we can do all the decisions and take a clear-headed decision.

Congrats on your son’s admission to some of his top choices. Hopefully the thought he put into the list of schools to which he applied makes any one of them a school where he’d be happy. If there is a significantly better aid offer, there’s your decision. If not, you as parents can do the research and make pro/con lists for you all to review. You know your son and the factors that are important to him. Try to make the lists as objective as possible; if you have a bias, be upfront about it. He sounds like a hard-working and motivated kid, so he is likely to be successful at any number of colleges!

This is why I hate to see kids wait to do college visits until after they are admitted. I understand the desire not to waste time and money seeing schools that are not possibilities, but given how crazy the high school seniors’ schedules are in April, it is seldom possible to work visits into the mix.

Look at the websites of the schools where you would like to double deposit, but in general you cannot do that after May 1. You can deposit at one school where he was admitted and still remain on the Caltech WL.

What do you think when someone said I am not sure which woman I am going to marry with. So I just engage with a couple girls this month and decide in a few months before the wedding.

Deposit at ONE school while staying on the WL at CalTech.
if you can’t visit, ask to be put in touch with students at the 4 schools.
If one is cheaper, there’s your choice.
