Thanks for doing this! I need to get a good idea of this list and whether or not I can roll with this or if I need to add more reaches, matches, or safeties.

My major will most likely be economics while studying one or two languages and probably taking math classes.

-second sitting: 2260 (700 cr/760 M/800 W)
-superscore: 2300 (700/800/800)
GPA:
-3.98 on a 4.3 UW scale (A+=4.3, A=4.0, A-=3.7, etc.) not sure what it would be on a 4.0 because its not just a simple conversion. I'd have to go through all my grades and edit it. At some point I'll do that, but not now
- 4.50 on a 5.3 W scale
Senior schedule:

It looks like a good list, but what schools are your financial safety schools (these are the schools that you know that you’ll get accepted to AND you know FOR SURE that you can afford.

What school is instate for you?

You have a LOT of out of state publics…those do not tend to give much need-based aid to out of state publics…so unless your family will pay all costs, they probably won’t be affordable. NYU also is horrible with aid.

Do you know how much your family will pay? If you’ll need a good amount of financial aid…AND…if you’ll QUALIFY for a good amount of FA, then you’ll need a different list.

You should also probably include a couple of schools that will give you a lot of merit scholarships for your stats as back up schools.

Awkward - my bad. Didn’t mean to hit submit. But I’m from NJ so in state schools would be rutgers and tcnj I guess. My parents have said that money won’t be an issue (pretty sure our income is >200k per year), but of course I will still need some schools good with money. What schools will I get good merit aid from? Ideally near a city or a good college town.

Pitt has been very generous with aid to students from my school. I don’t know if they are as generous to OOS applicants, but they are known to put up big money for top talent. With your scores, you would also qualify for their honors programs (there are a lot of them and I’m not familiar with them, but 1400 is the magic number).

I agree with the previous posters. Pitt’s Honors College would be a good addition to your list. I would also consider including Rutgers as an academic and financial safety, since some of your other probable match/safeties are either very expensive or have notoriously low FA.

Something you might want to check into is the availability of classes in your target languages at the schools on your list.

I gather from your list that you aren’t interested in LACs?

Oooh, no i should rephrase that. I ran for EiC, and completely honestly was the best candidate. I think everyone thought I would win. But instead, someone else won who is involved in more ECs, has better grades, is more of a suck-up, blah blah blah. It’s not a big deal it’s just annoying hahah.

Okay I’ll add Pitt’s Honor College and look into it. Thanks for the help!

And re: LACs…they just don’t really appeal to me. I visited one, Bucknell, and just hated it. That is partly due to the fact that it’s in the middle of nowhere, but still. I haven’t really considered an LAC and want a college on the larger side.

You’d be a strong candidate for UC Berkeley, UCLA and Michigan as they love students with very high HS GPA, though, tbh, with those stats, you might even crack one of the HYPSM.

our income is >200k per year), but of course I will still need some schools good with money.

Can you clarify what that means. You say that you will “NEED” some schools with money? That sounds like your parents won’t pay the $50k+ per year at many schools. Ask them how much they’ll pay. What exactly are you saying in that quote?

You’re not going to qualify for any need based aid at any school.

If you’re looking for merit, then OOS publics like Berkeley won’t work. Berkeley will expect your parents to pay the $50k per year to go there.

Your current list is NOT good for merit scholarship opportunities. Most or all of those schools will expect your parents to pay all costs.

What all do you want in a college? you mention wanting larger than LACs. Do you want “big sports” and the rah rah atmosphere?

*My major will most likely be economics while studying one or two languages and probably taking math classes.

*

There are several schools that will give you good sized merit scholarships…tell us more about the kind of school that you want.

Re: EiC… we fill out an application and turn it in, although that does almost nothing unfortunately. I had a good application and I thought it gave me good chances, but nobody really looks at it. Then we go through an interview in front of everybody, and they place their votes. This is the part I hate… instead of just voting, they talk about who they want and blah blah which to me is just crap. To boot, there were people there that were never even there working on the newspaper that honestly didn’t know me or the other applicants.

Re: money… what I meant by i will need schools with good aid is that I need to have that option in case something bad happens. I’m almost positive that my parents will pay whatever they need to for college, but I’ll ask if they’ll pay 50k a year.

As far as the type of school I want, I’m honestly pretty flexible. Location doesn’t really matter, NY, MA, CA, IL, etc, but preferably not in the South. I do, however, want to be near a big city or in a good college town. Not a rural school in the middle of nowhere. I would want a larger school, something like 7,000+. A good sports program would be nice, as I’m a big sports fan and love to follow them, but is not a dealbreaker. If you need to know more, just ask. Thanks for all your help!

Oh, and I’m not a partier so there doesn’t have to be a big party scene. There being a party scene wouldn’t be a negative thing, though.

Well most of the schools on your list will not come to your rescue if something bad happens financial-wise.

You might consider…

USC
Vandy
and apply to at least 2-3 schools that will give you large merit for your stats.

And, yes, ask your parents if they’ll pay $55k per year or not. While it sounds like they have a great income, their money may be commited to somethings that you’re not aware of. They may say…“no problem, we can pay $55k per year”…or they may say…“hmm, we can swing about $35k per year” …or they may say something else. NO matter what, it’s good to know now.

I asked my dad how much he could pay and he said not to worry about money - they’ll pay however much they need to. So cost won’t put a school out of the equation, but I would like to have a couple schools that will give me good merit aid and fit my description above.

Ok…you’re good to go financial wise, so that opens things up widely. :)

Your current list has a rather common theme…large state flagships…with a couple of exceptions. However, it seems (to me) that NYU is like an odd choice within this list. It doesn’t have a typical campus and campus-feel.

Since you have a couple of merit schools on your list, you really don’t have to change anything really.

Alexandre put this list together a few years ago about undergrad econ programs…you might want to look this over…

There are maybe 2 I’ll apply to from group I (Stanford, Cal), 4 maybe 5 from group II (NU, UCLA, UMich, UPenn maybe, UW), and group III, I’m on the border about NYU, Rochester, and UT. I haven’t visited NYU yet, and that will be the deciding factor on whether or not I apply there. And I might consider Claremont McKenna - one of my family friends went there and he loved every second of it. Do you think my list of schools is a good enough combo of safeties/matches/reaches? I might add Rutgers as an academic and financial safety
