What does it mean if you've had an official visit but the coach won't support you for early decision, only regular admission. Should you not apply early decision? Does it mean they don't want you on the team or that you're just not their top recruit? This is for Track at a D1 school (ivy).

TrackSam,

Since no one responded, I’ll take a shot. How did you leave things with the coach? I’m a little surprised he didn’t explain this to you? My very limited understanding of Ivy Track and Cross Country is their are very few slots the Coach can support in Admissions. Sorry, but it would appear that you are not one of them. So, if this is the school you absolutely want to go (regardless of sport) then apply ED (smaller admissions pool gives you a better chance). But you need to understand you will be trying to walk-on at this school at best even if you get in. I have a very good family friend (I coached him in baseball) who applied SCEA (like ED) to an Ivy without coaches support. It was his #1 choice. He was accepted. He walked on, and is still running

If you are unsure this is the school for you at this time and you have other prospects then don’t apply ED. Good luck!

@ fenwaysouth – Totally off topic:

Your avatar photo is the best I’ve seen of hundreds here on CC. My wife came into my home office to see why I was laughing so hard. It’s the look on his/her face that makes it perfect.

I think Fenway has a good point… The coach needs to clarify why he is supporting you RD, not ED. You should definitely ask the coach if that means you should not apply ED. Admissions may be giving the coach a limited number of ED spots for recruitment.

I have first hand experience with this scenario. My son was a recruited athlete (rower) and the Ivy coach said -paraphrasing- “admissions is giving me #- ED slots and #- RD slots. Right now, I have you down as RD. I want you to apply before the ED deadline, but mark RD. if I get a another ED slot from admissions, I will have you switch it.’ My son got his app in before ED deadline, and the coach called and said"good news, we were able to secure another ED spot.” It all worked out.

I would recommend you call the coach and find out more…
