Do you think the current evacuation as a result of Gustav will have an impact on the number of Tulane applicants for 2009? Seemed like Tulane had finally put most of the negative impact of Katrina behind them, and now this... How unfortunate!

I think Gustav itself may have a minor impact. But, what I think could have a more significant impact is whether this hurricane season is a repeat of the one in 200--when Katrina hit and we ran out of letters to name them.

If the Gulf continues to get hit this season, I would think many students (and especially their parents) may consider attending Tulane to be too risky. That said, my son adores NOLA and likes Tulane. He's very glad to be there and I'm completely supportive. I admitted to H today though that after seeing these storms stacking up in the Atlantic, I'm getting a little tired of worrying about hurricanes. I don't know how people from Florida manage the stress.

The impact will be minimal in my opinion. Most of the country doesn't seem to pay a large amount of attention unless it actually gets nasty. I stayed in New Orleans about 6 blocks from Tulane's campus during Gustav and it really wasn't that bad here. Now if the entire city had flooded again I would be very worried about the future of my alma mater.

As a class of 2009 student myself,
I can say that my parents aren't too pleased about me being interested in Tulane because of the hurricanes in NOLA.
However, it hasn't really swayed my interest. Though in the back of my mind I am trying to think of how evacuations could have a negative effect on my classwork, stress levels, ect.
Honestly though, I think I could deal with it if I feel like Tulane is the school for me. People go through evacuations and experience hurricanes all the time...and NOLA is standing strong still :]

I truly hope people don't cross it off their lists because of this fact alone. It is a wonderful school, indeed.
