I was wondering if anybody had any info, anecdotes or statistics, about what Wash U students do after graduation? Do most of the students go directly to grad school? or into a career? I applied as an engineering major, but I would value all info!

My parents never heard of Wash U before so I'm hoping to get some more info to ease them since they're mostly concerned about successes after college.

Thanks!

Show them this link and point out the number 12 ranking nationwide …

these things can mean much to parents …

Thanks!

Do you know anything about their alumni network? I was just wondering about job opportunities since it’s in the mid-west, I’m concerned there might not be a bunch of jobs, esp. for engineers

Just because Wash U is in St. Louis does not mean you have to work in the midwest…

They have the third best medical school in the US, behind Harvard and Hopkins. Strong biology department contributes to the exceptionally outstanding BME department.

They contributed close to 25% of the Human Genome Project.

There is a new building just for the engineering department, including labs and modern classes.

Alumni network is strong, in my honest opinion. Not as transparent as Harvard or Princeton, but if you graduate from there you will have an ample social network you can take advantage of (of course, you need to meet people there. Doing nothing will bring you nothing.)

I graduated from WashU engineering in 2008 and then went on to get my Masters (at another university) which I finished up in December. I am now working for an engineering firm on the east coast.

While I have no official statistics, I can tell you some observations i made about what engineering students ended up doing after graduation. A decent number stayed at WashU to complete a 5 year BS/MS degree, meaning they get both a bachelors and a masters in that time frame. Another sizable chunk went to grad school (masters, PhD, and med school mostly) at a different university. The largest group went straight into the job market, getting jobs around the country.

It might be useful to look at some of the companies who go to the career fair. Here is the link to just one of the career fairs that happens during the year.
