Age Difference in Roommates

Hey all. I'm a 20-year old Junior transferring to a university this fall, and I am rooming with some guy who is around 26 or so (it was random). He's been at the university before now, and I really have no idea why he's living in the dorms, but he is.

Has anyone here experienced living with someone with such an age gap? I figured it would be less awkward and I'd be able to click more with someone around my own age and such, but we will see how it goes.

Leave your room ASAP.

It’ll be fine. That age gap is nothing really.

I’ll be in the opposite boat come next Fall. I won’t really care too much unless I’m begged for alcohol constantly or something. I have no problem fitting in at a CC with recent high school graduates so I won’t see a problem when I transfer either.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it… last year there was maybe a 3 year age gap between my roommate and me (I was a junior transfer, she was a freshman) and it worked out fine… as a junior you’ll probably find yourself making more friends outside of the dorms anyways.

Wow…26?
I will just be blunt and say that there could definitely be problems in terms of the social acclimation. I think that trying to make friends in two different circles might be difficult so your relationship might be just one that’s better on a 1:1, in the room basis…but that’s not really a big deal.

I am sure he has been through the roommate thing before so he should be fairly respectful but I personally would be nervous about the situation. I would try to switch to be quite honest even though he could be the best roommate ever and you just haven’t met him.

It’s up to you but I actually haven’t heard of a age gap this large…the most I have heard is around 3 or 4 years and usually there are some issues regarding maturity but you guys are both upperclassmen so it shouldn’t be too big of a deal.

26 living in the dorms is not normal. at 26 you should be living in an apartment.
in the real world 26 is very young but in a college dorm that is like being 90.

I admit that the age gap does seem odd, but having a 26 year old in the dorms doesn’t really throw me off as bad as it seems to have those above me. I guess its because on the 21+ floors of my building we have several older grad students living here. Granted, we have a housing shortage on campus so that may be some of the reason. The campus apartments go super fast and off campus apartments are either horrible condition or outrageously priced.

I’m only a couple years older than my roommates and we’ve never had problems with the age difference. The only advice I can give is be respectful to each other? This guy could wind up being the best roommate possible, or the worst.

Hey, I’m a 27y/o sophomore and will be living in dorms as a Jr. I will be doing it because it’s the only way I can afford to go to a university.

It might be strange to people, but I don’t think you could ask for a better roommate than me: I am talkative and outgoing with tons of conversational interests, I will party if it’s around but am not going to put anyone out with it, I don’t present a noise issue of any kind and am a compete anti-narc and don’t care what anyone else does, and am not going to be really sloppy or try to make anyone be friends with me if they don’t want… The only issue you could realistically have with me is just that you think it’s lame that I’m there, which is pretty far from being my problem.

Everyone is different, but I don’t see how it would be a trend that people my age would be bad roommates. Quite the opposite.

I was about to make the same point as in #9.

Your room mates’s financial aid may cover room and board in the dorm, and so financials may dictate living in the dorm.

I am sure the 26 yr old roomie is not thrilled about living with an 18 yr old either–but is probably mature enough to deal with it.

Just remember all you need to do is get along–not all successful roomies are best friends, even when they are the same age.
