Just wondering, I am aware that the maximum age you can be to enter is 22, but does the Academy look somewhat unfavorably on candidates who are older. If I was to be accepted, I would be 21 (actually BCT is two days after my birthday) and was wondering if it really came down to it would the Academy choose someone who is fairly equal to me but younger?

Two things, first off you can be 23 upon entering the academy now - 22 for the prep school. Second is that from what I have seen the academy looks VERY favorably on older cadets since they will have other life experiences, and hopefully more maturity, to bring to the wing. I know of a few older, non-prior enlisted, guys that were accepted later and things turn out very well for them.

If you do get accepted, however, be prepared to be humble. It takes a big man to be able to shut up and say, "yes sir!" when your superior is only 19. Think of it like they are learning how to lead older enlisted guys when they are LTs.

Well said bluesuiter

It will have no negative consequences for you.

Like bluesuiter mentioned, it's really the same thing as what you'll likely find after graduation. As a 22-24 year old Lt, you may have 45 year old SNCOs working for you. It's just one more thing to get used to.

Plus you get to have jokes made about how old you are. All in jest, of course. ;)

certainly. we call our 24-year-old "grandpa" on quite a regular basis.
:D

Retirement jokes are the best. One of our guys is turning 25 and he's awesome- he came to work with us during 2nd Beast on drill and ceremony and he wasn't even one of our cadre.

do they know before hand who the "oldies" are so they can "joke" around with us about it?

there won't be joking before they have time to figure it out anyway... lol
