Agency Representation

Can we talk a little bit about this? For those familiar with seeking representation, can anyone chime in on these agencies?

Just like schools, I’m sure that “fit” is very important. I would like to know about any experiences that people have had with these agencies. Yes, my child is also seeking information from former classmates in NY about them, but I thought that I would reach out to this lovely group, since you all have had access to so much information throughout the years.

Just to add…my graduating senior child, who is an actor first but sings and dances well, has interests in all aspects of performance - cruise ship, stage work, film/tv - doesn’t matter, just wants to work.

Any info, good or not so good, is greatly appreciated.

A great place to ask that question is Audition Update. That’s a discussion site of working New York actors. Excellent resource for questions about the industry.

@actorparent1, I wasn’t able to find a lot of information on AU, so I decided to cast a wider net!

I think that you will find the majority of the people on this forum are “pre” representation… most are parents of HS/college kids.

I’m not sure how often she checks in on this board any more, but perhaps @AlexaMT might be able to give you some insights on the various organizations you mentioned.

Another suggestion: Most of these agencies have Facebook pages where they post when their clients get bookings. I would look at their posts and see if they are booking the type of work you are seeking. And if the type of actors they represent is similar to you and the type of work you seek.

I will say it is not absolutely necessary to have representation when you first get out of school. You may be able to make more informed decision after being in the city awhile and learning from others in the industry what these firm’s reputations really are. It is not a decision to be rushed.

My D is represented by The Luedtke Agency. They were referred to her after a casting director took notice of her. We are happy so far!!!

A couple of comments. Many agencies employ more than one individual. It’s the agent him/herself that you should be researching and not solely the agency as a whole.

In addition to previous grads of her school, she should be checking with any actors who she has connected with while she’s been at school, e.g., those who have taught her, those who have done master classes, those who she has worked with during summers, etc.

Something else to explore. Actors almost always have their representation info on their websites, and often, personal contact info. She can check for the actors she enjoys/respects/admires and see who represents them.

The other alternative, and one that many new grads employ, is to freelance with a few so you can see who steps up and gets her the auditions she wants. And then sign with whomever is the best fit.

Best of luck, and remember that the choice isn’t set in stone!

where is Audition Update? Can you post a link? I can’t find it.

I don’t know if we’re allowed to post links here, but it’s the words “AuditionUpdate” and then the usual dot com. Or you can Google it. Or if you go on the Backstage website, there’s a link to Audition Update at the top of the page.

If you still can’t find it, send me a PM and I’ll send you the direct link.
