Is it fair to consider these weed out classes or are they wake up calls?

- For some, they simply have to take them, they are no escape, they are part of their major. You can skip them, but then, you may be in a huge trouble later. By skipping such a class you may put yourself in a hole that will be very difficult to get out.
I liked that D’s program had this class right in the first semester so that kids will not waste time and credits, and money in the wrong for them path. Do not get me wrong, there were many other classes after that that were more challenging, but then the kid is adjusted, psyched up to work much harder than they ever did in HS, including those who ranked #1 in their respective private HS’s.
