AGH! (basically) All the tides filled now! Help!

I completed most of my schedule in March when I was visiting for honors weekend. My advisor for the weekend was extremely kind, but she had no expertise in the sciences (science undecl., looking into neuroscience.) I was undecided on my TIDES so I neglected to register then (bad idea on my part!)

I hate excuses, but I have been pretty sick for the past few months. Sick enough that my doctor does not feel comfortable giving me my mennigtis shot until I am 100% (poss. side effects would not coincide well with my current musculoskeletalproblems.) The health center had locked my registration until they received my immunization record. This lasted for a few months until I finally called them and explained to them the situation. (I WILL receive all my vaccinations before I leave, I promise you.) I was grateful that they unfroze my account but my joy was shortlived when I realized all of the tides I were interested in were full.. and not much is left!

My heart is really set on the any of the first three :(
1) TIDE 160-01 Introduction to Clinical Medicine
2) TIDE 110-01 Society & Neuroscience
3) TIDE 128-01 Detecting Crime
4) TIDE 101-01-05 Leadership, Politics, Power and Change

TIDE 159-01 Introduction to Research, my 5th option, is open but conflicts with my Chem lab.

I really wanted to do a TIDE that I was interested in. I am very very passionate about medicine (I work in a hospital and conduct research at a local lab) and the sciences in general. Yes, I have other interests and yes, I get that it may be enriching to "broaden my horizons" but as close minded and naive as this may sound: been there, done that. The humanities, language, art really cannot hold my interest. I can't really help who I am :-/

The vast majority of the remaining tides classes are closed. Its a sucky situation to say the least, so I guess I have to make the best of it. I am going to call my advising center first thing tomorrow and see if there is anything they can do. I'm not expecting them to jump through hoops for me (well maybe if I begged in person it would work haha but I don't have the means to do that.) Any advice? Anything I can do at all other than stalk the waitlists?

First of all, sorry you have had so much difficulty. Sounds like a very rough time.

Now to your issue. I would certainly go ahead and get on the waitlists, but I would also write to or call the prof teaching the TIDES class you want. I believe they can let you in if you can convince them. But as people change schedules things open up, so there is always a chance anyway.

My only other suggestion is to look at TIDES 149, Religion in Free Society. I don’t know what your goals are, but if you are thinking of becoming a practicing physician you will confront religious issues as part of the equation most likely. Maybe that is one way to look at a course like this. Just a thought, maybe useless.

If it makes you feel better, my heart was set on a few tides and they were all closed too. I ended up just choosing one that sounded okay of the ones open and thought about the fact that college is the place to explore new areas. Maybe you’ll find a new interest? Plus, it’s not like the TIDES courses are really designed to be super difficult. If anything I personally believe that they are to ease the transition between college and high school and provide for some opportunity to meet some other freshman. That being said, maybe it’ll be a good thing to expand beyond your interest and meet people that like other things (and likely majoring in other areas) then you? Just a thought… I’m trying to convince myself this all lol.

In my experience, the majority of teachers will let you join their class even if it is full if you take the time to demonstrate interest by just e-mailing them and asking if you can join. You should try that if you have your heart set on those TIDES classes.

EDIT: Along those lines, take the time to familiarize youself with the tulane e-mail system. It is very easy to find people’s e-mail usernames with that system.

So sorry about your troubles. My son just found out he got a 5 on the AP bio exam which means he doesn’t have to take one of the classes he was advised to take. When he tries to replace it, I’m sure a whole host of problems will arise with his entire schedule and closed classes. As it was, he had to take the Tides class - A Running Conversation - which was far from his first choice. Hope you are able to get into something you want eventually.

It also occurs to me that you shouldn’t look at the TIDES like a “real” course. It is only one credit hour and is designed to be fun, interesting and informal. It absolutely has as a primary purpose an environment that allows you to meet peers in that informal academic atmosphere. There seem to be quite a few open now, surely one of them is in line with a hobby or other interest you have. Antiques, anyone? Want to watch some movies? Newcomb College has an amazing history and there is a course that explores women in universities and the societal perception of them throughout the last century, with an emphasis on Newcomb’s history. TIDE-131. It is worth learning and embracing.

wait…i didnt turn in my immunization forms yet, but i still was able to register for my classes. what happened?

My D didn’t turn hers in until the end of June and had no issues either.

Resolved!!! I called my advisor, we tore up my entire schedule, and basically found a fit. I am SO relieved. My new schedule is actually better than before to believe it or not. I have to add, that I have found the advising office as well as admissions and fin. aid to be nothing but extremely friendly (and not to mention extremely helpful!) I cannot say that for the other schools, that is for sure!

Apparently registration was blocked because of a ‘glitch.’ It was corrected but now apparently, my Doctor’s office sent the wrong immunization records. I received a call at 8am this morning saying that on my immunization records there are vaccinations documented BEFORE MY BIRTH (we’re talking '80s here.) She was very nice about it and said she was just giving me a heads up before I am blocked again. I love my Dr, but this is about the fourth office error I’ve had to deal with. A month ago, she tested the completely wrong gland /face palm

thank you everyone for the advice!!!

Glad it turned out so well, and glad you found everyone so helpful. That is always good to hear. Good luck!
