A lot of college applications ask for work experience. However, I do not have any. Is this going to really negatively impact my application to highly selective colleges?

Also, I did help a neighbor housesit on a few ocassions, should I list that? I also helped one of my parents' friends by substituting for their cashier when she was ill, although that was only a few days. Should I list that too? I know these are really weak... would I be better off leaving it blank than looking like I was grasping at straws?

I would probably not list the cashier thing, or the housesitting. Many high school students have never had a job. Don't worry about being the only one who doesn't have anything to put in that section. My main reason for saying this is that most college apps ask you to list the dates that you held the job, and if you put down a couple of days, then it really isn't worth it. I'm sure that your ECs and other activities are substantial enough so that not having a job isn't a big deal. In my opinion, the section is only there so that people who aren't sure whether work qualifies as an EC have someplace to put it. It's really nothing to worry about, I don't think, most people can't get jobs until their junior/senior years anyway because of their age. Best of luck!
