I asked my professor in January to write a recommendation letter for me so I can apply for transfer to another college. I asked for them to be done mid-February. He agreed to do it... and today I found out he still hasn't sent the rec.

We're going on spring break on Friday, and I know he won't write it over break if he doesn't write it this week. He's flying out tomorrow afternoon to visit his mother, who is dying and has just moved into hospice care, so I feel awful asking him to send it, well, immediately. But on the other hand, I can't complete my applications without the letter he promised he would write me.

What's the best way to handle this situation? I obviously don't want to be rude in an unfortunate situation like this, but this has really put me in a bind.
