yes, i hated ucla, but i went on a day where there were immense crowds of children, i suppose i could grow to like it, i loved cal, but my father hates the idea, and my bio teacher[who works at ucsd] said berkeley was a better means for getting into oxford and john hopkins(my dream med schools) …

BUT i need a second opinion, and i would be about 9 hours from home w/ no friends[AKA actual room to grow independently] and because of my indecision i missed a free weekend to cal… so i want to make up my mind-but i dont want to act impulsively, after all med school is my ultimate goal

I may be biased because I love Berkeley, but it seems like Berkeley is the way to go. You shouldn’t have to grow to love a university. You will have many opportunities no matter which way you go. I have no idea about getting into Oxford and John Hopkins (except what I learned from a class project I did about Oxford all the way back in 8th grade lol) but if that’s what your Bio teacher says, he/she would probably know better than most. I vote for Berkeley, it seems like the best choice for you.

thanks everyone for the advice, i think i will attempt to stalk john hopkins and ask them which uc they recommend, or wait, is this inappropriate??? but

yes asian man, i definitely prefer cal, but am worried about getting into top med school and being shunned for months by dad, plus i already sent to my SIR to BOTH cal and ucla[dumb i know!] need to call the one i choose to decline soon, and sent housing app to ucla w/ roomate request, i think my friend may forgive me, but i’m worried about my dad …

Your dad should respect your decision. Sit down and talk to him and explain that you really want to go to this school. Ask him why he doesn’t want you to go.

As for med school, there are many ways to get there, and Berkeley is a fine path.

my father, the fact that its a safer school for me[as far as people i know, the area, the campus, the clinic volunteer ops] and berkeley is a big risk, i’ll literally be on my own and have to work my butt off to make sure im qualified for mcats and research experience/volunteering but in big risk there is big opportunity…

At Oxford, you apply for med straight out of either IB or A-Levels.
If you’ve got a 1st degree from any accredited university, your option is to pursue a MSc-PhD in your field.
There are a few medical schools in the UK that accept baccalaureate degree as an entrance and among them are Warwick and St George’s, University of London. They’re both very-well respected medicals schools too.

Berkeley is the more respected name between the two in the UK especially at Oxbridge.

thanks to all, if there are any SOURCES you guys can point me to, so i can defend berkeley and defend its name[apparently to my dad, its name is tarnished as opposed to UCLA’s] that would be awesome???

Is it too early to be thinking about JHU med school? Statistically speaking, you’ll probably end up with a biology degree and become a lab lackey.

middsmith, thanks for the reality check, but i am determined and i have the dedication, i just want to set myself up for success is all, i figure i should aim high, i applied to princeton and harvard but got rejected-however this influenced me to be a better applicant and got me into ucb, ucla, ucsd, usc, ucd, cal poly slo and waitlisted for stanford… i refuse to be a lab lackey in training

why did your dad think Berkeley’s name has been tarnished? tarnished with what?
I think there are quite a few schools in the world that is better regarded than Berkeley. In the US, HYPSM are the only schools I can really tell that is better regarded than Berkeley. Internationally, Berkeley is regarded just as excellent at HYPSM except for Harvard, which is regarded as the most prestigious school in the universe.

^ That’s not tarnished. Being ranked number 9 in the nation isn’t a “tarnished” record at all.
Besides, that ranking was for postgrad education. For undergrad, it’s hard to tell given that there’s no data available. But between the two, Berkeley has got the better record in as far as sending graduates to med school. I had the link to the data that you’re talking about. Unfortunately I couldn’t find it now. I will still keep on looking at it for you. :)
