When do dorms usually get full (jester and san jacinto mainly)???

I'm ready to apply right now but my school is gay and messed up all our grades so the transcripts aren't updated yet...now i have to wait till they fix all of this to send it...

Theres no way to apply for housing before you get accepted right?

Your not going to be late for Jester for some time. But your chances at San Jac might have dwindled away. Nobody can really say for sure since this is the first year with this system.

You're definitely not late, azndude1. The head of our school's counseling dept met with a UT rep (at UT) on Tuesday (9/17) and he said that at that time only 25 housing apps had been received! He also joked that most of them were probably from our school.

I think this new requirement to have your admissions app submitted first has slowed down the housing app process considerably.

The requirement does make sense, though: get housing apps and deposits only from those who have enough interest in UT to actually submit an admissions app.

But of course, better safe than sorry... do a good job on your essays, get your school to send the transcript, etc and then submit as soon as possible, so you can get to that housing app. (D still hasn't finished her UT app - this weekend will be the magic weekend, I'm hoping!)

Last year, the deal was that if you did not get accepted UT, they were willing to refund your housing deposit.
If you were accepted and decided not to go to UC, they would keep your housing deposit.
It is probably the same this year.

You are not offered a housing contract until you are admitted and pay your enrollment deposit. If you are a first time freshman, accept the housing contract and pay the $300 advance payment and decide not to attend UT before May 1, it is refundable. If you decide to cancel your housing contract at any time and are still planning to attend UT the $300 is not refundable.

Does anyone know at what point in the housing app process they let you specify a dorm preference? Daughter has all of her admissions app in (as of yesterday) and she did her housing app today, but the online form only let her choose between shared space vs single space; it did not let her choose a dorm preference.

UTHousing, when you say "You are not offered a housing contract until you are admitted and pay your enrollment deposit", do you mean that at that point you get to choose a dorm preference?

You apply for UTexas admission. Then you apply for housing.
Then you wait.
Then you get your letter of acceptance.
Then you pay your enrollment deposit so they know you are really coming. Once they have your enrollment deposit, they send you a housing contract. This is when you choose your dorm - you get to pick a first, second and third choice.
The order of assigning your dorms and your dorm room is determined by when you applied for freshman year housing.

San Jacinto and Duren are probably already filled up by now.
Jester and the other dorms won't be filled until the RD deadline.

I Hope UT - When the Adcom had their info. session, they said that a couple hundred apply early before school starts. The top 10% students usually apply throughout the fall and rest (non top 10%) apply early Jan or right at the Jan. 15th deadline because of 1st semester grades.

that sucks..i dont know if I can stand the noise/smell everyone's talkin about from Jester. What are some other decent dorms? I really wanted San Jacinto :(

Lol. You can still apply and see if they have any spaces left..iono.
But I've heard Kinsolving is less noisier and just as good as Jester.
Brackenridge, Roberts, Prather, Moore-Hill are other options beside Jester.

Towers and Castillian are private dorms. Towers is a couple of blocks off campus (west campus), is mostly guys, and a large group of them go greek. It has the reputation as a party dorm, but my son lived there last year and did just fine - the walls are cinder block, so not a lot of noise goes through them. Castillian is a little bit closer, just off Guadalupe. It is more of a mix of people, but it has a horrible reputation of things breaking down - like the elevators.

Both are a bit more expensive than most dorms (excluding Duren and San Jacinto), but they offer a bit more. There are different floor plans, but each suite has a kitchen, breakfast area and den. My son's suite had 2 bedrooms, 1 bath and living quarters, and I think it ran around $9000 for the year, including the full meal plan. He really enjoyed living there, met a lot of great people, said the food was decent, and it was an overall good experience.

My son #3 will be living there (hopefully - got to keep the grades up) in the fall of 2010.

It says on the housing web site that everyone who has wanted to get on campus has been able to get on campus, although I am sure some people who would have preferred San Jac are in Jester.

I do not think it is too late to get into San Jac and Duren but that is just my opinion.

If anyone hears how many complete apps have been received thus far, it would be helpful if they would post - that would give us an estimate of the maximum number of housing apps that have gone in so far. Many people pick honors as a first choice, and many women pick Kinsolving as a first choice - San Jac and Duren are nice but they are considerably more expensive.

The user "UTHousing" has helped on this forum before and definitely has knowledge the likes of which could only come from within the housing office at UT. Right now, surely those of us who read this forum are the only ones that know that as of Oct 23, 2008, there were 843 housing applications in. Very useful information! (Thanks, UT Housing)

You are welcome. With all of the changes in our housing processes this year, I want to make sure that we get the word out! UTHousing is the Division of Housing and Food Service at UT Austin.
