<p>I am using the Common App to apply to my schools, and in it there is a short ~150 word essay that asks you to write about your favorite EC.</p>
<p>I want to choose the "other" option for my main essay topic and write about my EC in 500 words, not 150. Is it okay if I talk about something cliche like being a basketball captain for my shorter essay, and then talk about my true passion in my main essay?</p>

<p>I think that would be fine. What the common app really does is asked you to elaborate on one of your EC's.. it doesn't have to be the one your most passionate it about if your true passion is something different. Simply elaborate on something that's important to you and on your main essay show what your main interest is. Best of luck!</p>

<p>I think I'm misunderstanding tbhnams question. Do you mean if the short essay was 500 words and the long essay was something different? Yes, I still keep my previous answer. But remember.. 500 words is the limit. You don't want to bore them with too much EC stuff. While 150 is extremely short, 500 is a bit long if your going to do two, however, if you make it interesting then there is still no problem. Good luck.</p>
<p>hm..yes, sorry if i phrase the qn in the wrong way..In the common application, there are two sections at the end. One is your long essay in which you are supposed to any essay from the 6 topics available (including the topic of your choice)..On top of it, there is this part about describe your most significant activity from the list of extra curricular and activities that you have listed before that. They said to write it in 150 words. Is it ok if i write it much longer? Like into an essay about my favorite activity? Should be about 500 words?</p>
<p>I wouldn't go too far over 150. The people who read the essays read a ton of them and probably have a pretty good idea of what a 150-word essay should look like.</p>
