Ahhh good ol CC

so i was a CCholic like I’m sure many of you are. I applied to Penn ED last year, got in, and now I’m a freshman here…been just over a month:) I’m enjoying myself so far and I thought I’d give back to CC because it was a great forum for support and eased my nerves about the whole admissions process. So if anybody has questions about admission(not what are my chances cuz I really wouldn’t know) or anything about penn(the little bit i know so far!), feel free to ask.

Would you mind critiquing my essay?

chocolatechip,

Could you comment on housing/dorms? Overcrowded, comfortable, etc.? I hear stories of two students sharing the equivalent of a closet, with no room to move. What have you found?

Thanks!!

Can you tell us what the political atmosphere is like? I'm curious.

audiophile: You are describing my room. The Hill House rooms are tiny. The Quad rooms make me cry every time I see them because they're so much larger and nicer. On the flip side, though, we do have our own dining hall, which is very convenient.

audophile, i too am in hill(who are u legendofmax??) and yes, the rooms are tiny. it's livable but no extra room; i would request a single for whatever number you put hill as(in the housing lottery form). the quad is beautiful, the rooms are bigger, there is AC...but people underestimate the value of an in-house dining hall, especially when it gets cold outside. the dining hall for the quad is not even close to them so i consider that a major plus. also, hill seems to be a friendlier place and people roam outside their rooms more. then there's kings court which is infamously known as a nerd, anti-social dorm although i was there once and the rooms are really nice and big and the people seemed just fine to me; plus, they have a nice dining hall. the highrises are a good option if you like the whole apt. living style although some freshmen have a harder time socially at the beginning when living there. don't know much about the others...

the political scene seems to be liberal, i'm not too involved in it but in general, most people are from the north east(liberal) and california(liberal) so they dominate. however, from what ive seen, the campus isn't very politically energized--its a far cry from berkeley.

chocolatechip: you got aim?

do you know the approximate percent of people who get dorms in the quad?

Hey guys! I am also a freshman at Penn, but I happen to live in the Quad. Yep, the rooms are big, and we do have air conditioning. However, I think Hill (at least the floor I have seen) has a really great sense of community. I have tons of friends in Hill, and I am in there a lot. But, you can't beat the beauty of the Quad! Not sure what percent of kids are in the quad, but of the people I meet, it seems that most either live in the quad or hill.
On politics- There definitely are people who are involved in politics. A week or so ago a big protest in Washington DC was advertised on locust walk for Penn students to attend. However, there is not a pervasive political feeling on campus. Like all things at Penn, if you want to get involved you can.
If you guys have more questions, feel free to ask, I would love to help out potential Penn students!

cafeteria food gives you the runs, steal fruit!

So how tough are your classes? Are you studying all the time?

Students from Wharton socialize normally with those of the college?

contrary to rational logic: most whartoners are pretty cool. actually most of my friends are in wharton. great kids, but theyll still stab ya in the back for an A

I'm taking an easy schedule this semester just to ease in so my work load isn't bad at all although engineering kids have it bad. Wharton kids are normal, I haven't noticed any arrogance. And legend, pm me:)

i can't decide whether or not to do apply to SEAS at penn... do you have any engineering friends (BME especially) and do they like it so far, despite the work? do you know how possible it is to transfer out of engineering into arts and sciences?

what's your intended major?

i'm really considering applying ED to penn...

Yes, Wharton kids socialize with everyone else. Why wouldn't they? They ARE normal people. I have friends in every school. One of my friends is in engineering, and she works incredibly hard. But, she still has a social life and participates in clubs on campus. I'm in the college, and the classes aren't ridiculously hard. They just take some work.

So help me, this will be posted everywhere on this board!!!!!

HAHAHAHA.....ok.....calming down.....it's late

anyway, I'd like to say that if i get in i PROMISE knock on wood to come back here to answer Q's and such for next years seniors. I swear, lol

HAPPY HALLOWEEN <--warning--racist content/bad language etc ALTHOUGH IT WAS ON PUBLIC TV, not work or school safe ;)

What are the people like? What's the general social atmosphere?

Thanks!
