Ahhh!!! Panic Attack!!!

Hey guys,

I'm currently a senior, and I'm completely done with all my college apps. But now I'm worried. I'm a little anxious so I just wanted to know what my chances would be for the colleges that I applied to. So here are my stats:

GPA(the killer): 3.56 (UW) (Screwed up bad in freshman and sophomore year but 4.0 in junior and currently 4.0 too ) 4.0(W)
SAT: 2370 (M: 800 CR: 800 W: 770) Super Score: 2390 (took it twice)
ACT: 35 (M: 36 S: 35 R: 35 W:35)
SAT II: Math II (800) Chem (800) Bio (800) Physics (720) Lit (770)
AP: Bio (5) Chem (5) Stats (5) Lit (5)-(huge surprise) US (3)
Classes this year- AP Lit; AP Physics; AP Environmental; AP Psych; AP Econ; AP Calc BC (yea you may think I'm trolling but this is like the typical schedule for everyone I know)

Well those are my grades and tests and now to the ECs:

USABO Semi Finalist

Summer Medical Research at UCSF (published and letter of rec from professor)

Water Project in India (With a help of a water purification company, I went to some villages where my parents grew up and established a water purification system. I had I job of building 5 water purification tanks, convincing the politicians there to pay for the project, and educating the people living there why it was necessary to have clean water)

Those are my top ECs and here are my rest:

Around 50 hours of aiding autistic kids at my Mom's school (letter of rec from teacher)

Around 240 hours of hospital volunteer

I shadowed a interventional cardiologist for around 40 hours

I played B-ball for like 2 years and Track for 2 years

I went to Jamaica over Winter Break this year to do a internship there. (Amazing experience highly recommend this for anyone who wants to go into the med field)

Letters of Rec:

AP Bio Teacher, English Teacher, AP Physics Teacher, US History teacher (I think this was crap), AP Chem Teacher

Water Purification Director, UCSF professor, Cardiologist, Doctor in Jamaica, Autistic Volunteer Class Teacher.

I think my essays were pretty good. My AP Lit teacher helped me out cause we're hecka chill and I got help from this Ivy Max Program for college apps (I know you guys prob think I'm nooob right, but it was actually really helpful)

Well that's pretty much it
And here are the schools I applied to:

UChicago
Stanford
Cal Tech
Johns Hopkins
WUSTL
Boston 7 year med
UMKC BS/MD
Northwestern (BS/MD) (but I wouldn't mind going even if I didn't get BS/MD)
UCLA
UC Berkley
Brown
UCSD (BS/MD)
Harvard (I know I got no chance, but my mom told me to)

safety?? or were you already admitted to your state school?

^ Echoing rodney, which is your safety? Those schools all seem to fall within the reach or high match category, they are all super selective.

My safety school is Emory, I got in Early for that school.

Emory participates in Early Decision, which is a binding agreement. If you were accepted to Emory under Early Decision you have to go to Emory. You are not allowed to apply anywhere else. You must IMMEDIATELY withdraw your applications to every other school, otherwise Emory can revoke your admissions altogether.

Also, your deposit for securing your place at Emory from ED admissions was due yesterday. If you haven’t submitted it, you’re going to need to call them and explain why, lest you lose your place.

NYU2013, yeah ur absolutly right about the binding program. However, when I talked to the guys at Emory, they said that they would be willing to let me go if I pay a fee of x dollars (not sure how much). Emory was actually my 3rd choice, just behind U of C and WUSTL. So now I kinda have the best of both because if I get into those schools, then I pay the fine and I’m out, but if I don’t then Emory would put me in RD for a small fee. These admission guys are really nice, I was really worried that they would screw me over but once I talked to them, they were fairly chill about it all, that is if I paid the fine.

wth? what fine?..they are letting you out of ED if you pay them???

Is there actually a “fine” or do you just mean losing your deposit? The ED agreement isn’t legally binding…its based on an honor system that youre obviously abusing

" So now I kinda have the best of both because if I get into those schools, then I pay the fine and I’m out, but if I don’t then Emory would put me in RD for a small fee."

If that’s exactly what they said, I don’t think you’re understanding quite what they mean. If that’s the case, it means that you will be, essentially, re-applying to Emory and you may not be re-admitted under RD. It looks like, to me, that they are simply going to take you of ED if you do not comply with ED rules and your ED admissions will be revoked. Instead, they’re offering to move you over to RD, which is non-binding.

I think you need to seriously consider what it is that you’re doing, because it looks to me as though you’re about to lose your ED admission to Emory and you have no safety schools. If you do not accept the ED admissions, Emory will simply move you over the RD application pool and you may not get in again. If I were you, I would take the Emory ED and not risk anything; you may wind up having no acceptances anywhere with the game you’re trying to play.

If Emory wasn’t your top choice, you shouldn’t have applied there ED. However, you did. Which means you should be honoring your agreement and not trying to back out of it.

^^^^^that…

Shooot, NYU2013, I think you maybe right. They said that I would loose my deposit if I didn’t go, but they gave me time to make my decision until the time they sent out admission letters for RD. And by that time if I didn’t get into any of the other schools that I applied to, then I’d probably end up going to Emory. But if I do get admitted, then I simply loose my deposit and pay a fine {which adds up to around 10k-15k (parents are gonna kill me for this)} and I’m free to go.

I sure hope that Emory gave that to you in writing since I have never heard of a college, especially one of Emory’s stature, allowing an ED accepted applicant to simply pay a “fine” to get out of a binding decision. It basically defeats the whole purpose and incentive to the college to alllow that kind of practice.

As for safety schools I applied RD for UC Davis and UC Irvine, so no worry there. But I think this Emory thing is gonna mind f**k me for a while. Alright now I’m panicing even more!!!

Guys help me out here, should I call Emory and find out whats going on. Cause when I asked them, they said that some schools do this for ED, just so that the student doesn’t have to go to a school he/she doesn’t want to go to.

^ Of course you should call Emory to get clarification, it is a big deal. I also would not want to be the one to explain to your parents about a 10-15k “fine” because you backed out of an ED agreement. I would love to know how they determined that “fine” amount.

Aight, aight!! So I called Emory (surprisingly they picked up, thought they wouldn’t take calls today) and they explained the situation fairly nicely. Aight so apparently Emory has this sub college called Oxford college and what this is that people that are accepted to Oxford go to Emory after the first two years. And Oxford has a EA program. So even though I would be rejected from Emory because I didn’t comply to its ED rules, I would still have a chance at going to Oxford college and then matriculating into Emory after two years. And BobbyCt I was just guessing that it would be 10-15k. I seriously don’t know the real amount. What I know for sure is that I would be loosing the deposit that I made. Whew!!! This is a big relief. So they practically just gave me time to decide whether I would want to go to Oxford college or not.

Aight now I have another question, is oxford college as a safety a good option, cause I know nothing about it. And also do other schools do this with ED too or is it just Emory??

You’re playing a fool’s game vinny14. Not only did you make a dumb decision by apply ED to a school you don’t seem to have the most interest in, but it(a TOP 20) college accepted you with a crap GPA and you are willing to still play this game. You got LUCKY, just take the ED and withdraw all other apps and just chill for the rest of the year. The only safety you have on your list is UCLA! UCLA over Emory? Are you kidding me??

Every other school on that list is a low to high reach…and you still want to roll the dice?

No other school does this with ED. And Oxford College is not a good choice when you can just go to emory.

vinny14,

Can your family pay for Emory, or not? Do you need to be able to compare aid packages? If that is part of the deal, you need to sit down with your parents and sort them money issue out before you do anything else.
