I know it's kind of early... but have you guys started thinking about summer internships yet? If so, how are you applying? I personally want an internship in business or finance and there's not much recruiting going on at my school. I've looked at lists like

but I wonder what the competition is like for those internships? I mean, since they are posted online, won't a lot of kids apply to them? Or is it work applying?

I don’t have any experience applying online, but I suggest looking around your school. Many have internship programs, and you can often find someone to work with. I don’t have experience with business, however, so that may be a bit harder to do…

I’m hoping to get a summer internship in February during my Career Fair conference. Already had some interested HR’s from Hyatt so I’m hoping they will interview me. I would recommend just looking online and using your school’s career services for help on your resume and cover letters.

I’m sure there’s some sort of alumni directory available. Don’t be afraid to cold call alums and companies to ask about opportunities. Obviously it’s super competitive to get an internship at the big Wall St firms, and they recruit mostly from target schools. Definitely go to any recruiting events on campus and network!

I’m in the process of a making my resume (which is lackluster) to get an internship for the summer. Its a requirement to graduate, so hopefully I can find one.

It’s not that early…most deadlines for banking internship deadlines are in late January/early February.

The summer internship list you posted is pretty competitive, and if you don’t go to a target school you will need to network a lot to get one. Just submitting an online application is unlikely to get you any interviews because like you said, lots of people will be applying.

Son is in the STEM area and I did some looking around last night and the day before and I found some online that have deadlines in January and February. He did this last year and it was a moderate amount of work. Two or three recommendations, resume, transcripts and an essay were typical.

Last year, I did see some internships that didn’t get enough people - my guess is that the location wasn’t popular or that the research areas weren’t interesting.

I don’t know about other departments here, but in our department almost everybody has to do an internship. Mine has to be between my 4th and 5th semesters in the program (summer before graduating in December). Others have to do their internship the semester AFTER they finish every other requirement.

Well the annoying part is that I have to pay my school to work for free. It counts as 6 credits, so I have to pay for 6 credits. I’m hoping I can get extra financial aid, as I can’t fit it into the regular school year and have to do it this summer.
