Aid needed

So we're in to Fordham, dad was laid off the second day of son's senior HS year and mom closed her biz. Mom worked in district for immediate income. Dad's second unemployment stint has now lasted a year. Aid package a
Offered $17 off the sticker price of $63. How can this be? There are not many kicked by life this hard at college time. Planning to have meeting w aid office but.....will it help? There's GOTTA be extra funding left! Sweating now...

Fordham does not promise to meet need. They frequently gap. they do give merit for strong stats, but maybe yours werent high enough or are you a transfer student?

Why are you just finding out now what your aid pkg is?

What other schools accepted you?

Are you a transfer? If so, are you coming from a CC or a univ?

Fordham is a PRIVATE school. Did you expect a private school to give you money for high school? In addition to all of this Fordham is a school that does not guarantee to meet full need even as they define it,much less by FAFSA EFC, and rarely do they meet full need. Very few full rides to Fordham. They do give a commuter allowance, and for those with high enough stats to get a full tuition award, it sweetens the pot to commute. Truly, you did not expect a school to pay for your room, board, shampoo, laundry, books, transportaion and give you free tuition as well, did you?

Just as most people go to their local public school that is supported by their community’s (and often family’s) tax dollars, you can check out what the local public college resources are for you. Likely, there is a community college, a directional state college, and/or satellite campus or facilities for a state school to which you can commute for little cost. With an unemployed parent, you are may qualify for a professional judgement of a zero EFC (dislocated worker) , something to discuss with the financial aid officer, and see if you can qualify for a PELL grant. That goes up to $5700, I believe. Your state might have some funds for instate schools, and you can borrow up $5500 your first year. I also suggest you find a job to meet some discretionary costs. It’s going to be a tough go and that’s how it is for most college students Going a way to a private college is a privilege even more expensive and luxurious than a grand world tour on a cruise boat or getting a Mercedes, all expenses paid. In fact people often say it’ s akin to buying such a Mercedes each year and running it off a cliff, cost wise. You can’t afford a Mercedes, unless you can get into the very few schools that give meet financial need (and you still likely have to come up with the gap, no school guarantees to meet full need as defined by FAFSA EFC, or if you have something a college so wants, that it gives you a full or near full ride award (NCAA important sport athletes, top students if school has full ride awards).
