under important links, third choice.

no need based aid for DD, may eliminate RU as a choice

hey where do you get the rutgers' ID?

either look on your physical acceptance letter, or go here and log in to "check your status" on the middle right side of the page.
http://admissions.rutgers.edu/0201.asp
you can log in with your SS# and your pin. Your RU id is on that page.

then go to the FA page and log in to the new students aid page http://studentaid.rutgers.edu/

Does anyone know exactly what I'd be doing in a "Federal Work Study" program? Typically I mean.

I think you work for the school in order to pay off your tuition. Most of the money goes to the school while you pocket the leftover amount.

BTW thx oldinj

Does anyone know to to improve my financial aid offer? Since the letter that they sent me says "initial offer." I'm assuming that I can get a better one. Thank you!

You may be able to get the numbers changed, but it isn't likely.

Question: The website just listed "awards" in the form of loans et al. It didn't include scholarships. Any idea why?

work-study means the federal govt. helps pay your salary through funds to the college. they do NOT keep the money you earn. You get a paycheck every two weeks. It is taxable income. My experience has been that some (not RU I don't think) schools put down big work-study job "awards' then do not have the jobs available that would earn that much money. You usually work 10 hours a week at minimum wage.

any college including Rutgers can consider other items not shown in the FAFSA - big medical bills and some other stuff. You have to appeal the award. Then you have to wait months til a committee reviews it. Dont' count on much from RU this year, what with the budget cuts.
Lynxie - did you get a scholarship that is not listed? I assumed there was not scholarship listed because DD didn't get one. Let us know if that's wrong.

Yeah, I did. I received a rather energetic scholarship in the mail today which, while not mind-shattering, is healthy. Assuming that I was not sent a false scholarship, which would be deletrious for my heart to the extreme, the Rutgers aid package online does NOT include scholarships.

Lynxie, my aid package online included my scholarship. It was explicitly enumerated, as were the others (pell, work study, and loans).

This was a Scholarship from the University? Was it campus specific? I have a friend who was named a "Dean's Scholar" (I think) which came with an award of 9K (I think), but it was only applicable to the Newark campus. Was the award something like that? If so, that might explain why it wasn't listed, while the other general scholarships were.

my "initial offer" included the scholarships i got from rutgers. maybe you got the scholarship too late, for them to update your status? it will probably be included in your final offer.

Argh! I recieved today, in the mail, a letter saying "congrats! you have earned...National Scholarship"... and so on.

If this is a chimeria, which is unlikely, I will be angry. Just call Rutgers I guess and see what they say! Either way, they are very nice, or at least the vibe I get from them is.

Jeez my financial aid offer is terrible. I have a question. I think that my EFC was a little high (7373) because I collect Social Security from my father (who passed away). I get like $750 a month, which probably contributed a lot to a high EFC because my parents (mom and stepdad) together barely make $40K. My mom will be making less money this year because she used to work two jobs and only works one now. I will stop getting SS August of this year, which is the month before school starts. Could I appeal and let them know whats going on?

InKontrol - yes appeal right away. Discuss this with a financial aid officer. If they are able to change the EFC based on the real life figures the NJ grants may kick in, which is your best bet at this point. make sure you're not just talking to a student worker but an actual FA person. Ask if you can bring paperwork to school, or fax it, otherwise mail it. put name/SS on every page, or your RU id number.
You need to write a letter stating mom's income drop. I've even made photocopies of pay stubs and sent that along so they could see salary changes, and/or add a signed statement from Mom that she has only the one job. The can consider your income drop (SS), and might be able to change your EFC with that too...but assume next year will reflect it more. Remember that these numbers may not just change (the FA package) as your EFC drops, so be sure next year to check that your fall package for 08/09 reflects the drops -though NJ grants may kick in with the low income.

ok I realllly doubt I'm going to rutgers now.. it was kind of my alternative choice if I didn't get into UMD (my in state school) but I did.. so yeahhh

Yeah Rutgers didnt give me any worthwhile aid either. My EFC is ~7500 and they offered me 5500 in loans and 2000 in work study. Its pretty bad, that means my parents have to find a way to make an extra 15000 if i want to go there.

does anyone know when we fill find out about nj grants? (nj hesaa)
