Aid, Scholarships, OOS, etc...

I heard on this forum(I think it was Alexandre, but I'm not sure) that UM usually meets around 80% of an OOS kids needs. Is this true? Do you think it will continue in the future, with these economic times?

Say I have a EFC of 20k, while UM costs, what, 43k, so they will give me about 18k mixture of grants/loans? (Meeting about 80% for OOS)

I'm from Ohio and my goal is if I go out of state for college(and I probably will), is to get my COA <20k. But that might be hard, especially at UM.

And, I think my stats will be good enough to get into UM, but probably not a significant scholarship. UM GPA 3.8-3.9, 30-33 ACT, 1350-1450 SAT, Eagle Scout, few more ECs.

I know, kind of a big variable on the test scores, but I'm working on them.

Thanks.

why is your username "hawaiiboy15" when you come from Ohio? lol.
are you a senior? what were your precise test scores?

Birth state.

I'm just a sophomore, so I've still got time, but those are estimates of what I think I'll get with practice.

too early to worry about FA.

^
exactly.

I actually have the same question as an OOSer with an EFC of about 10k...when do they notify you about financial aid then?

me too. Im dying to find out how much money im going to get, and find whether or not my family will be living in the poor house to support me or not.

We were at Campus Day this past Friday. From the Financial Aid presentation, it sounds like if you get Profile and FAFSA completed by February 15, you should have an aid offer by March 15th. The sooner you get your information in, the better. They will start downloading data on 2/15.

Im guessing all the michigan tradition scholarships have already been sent out? That sounded like a pretty nice one. $5,000 per semester for 8 semesters.

At the aid presentation, they said that those offers would be mailed out by the end of January. These are not based upon financial need. There will be other grant offers as part of financial aid packages.

I don't know if all of the Michigan Traditional Scholarships were already sent out, but my S received his before Christmas. This is completely seperate to the financial aid packages that will be sent out after FAFSA and PROFILE have been reviewed.

All those of you who who are worrying about financial issues, remember that there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with communicating with the office of Financial aid. Call them, talk to them, express your needs and concerns. Universities have been known to lend a caring ear and sometimes, they accommodate reasonable needs.

Portergoblue, call Michigan and tell them your situation. You can attend OSU for under $15,000/year. Tell them Michigan is your dream school and that you want to attend more than anything. However, explain to them that without help, you would not be able to attend. Close it by telling them that if you are given a financial aid package that meets your needs, you will cease being a Bucknut and would become a Wolverine. That's got to be worth a couple of pages in somebody's book! hehe

Hawaiiboy, do not worry about college for another year. For now, improve your scores and your GPA as much as possible and apply before November 1 in your Senior year. Who knows, you could get a nice scholarship. A 3.9 unweighed GPA along with a 34 on the ACT could get you a nice little scholarship, which along with some FA could make Michigan reasonably affordable.

Thanks. I'm working on my testing.

I like how UM reconfigures the GPA, my standard H.S. UW is a 3.85, UM GPA is 3.94. Not a huge boost, but it will help a little more.

Keep your GPA steady. One thing I wish I could go back and do over is taking tests more times. I only took the SAT twice and ACT once. I only concentrated on the math part of the SAT because Michigan engineering only bases admission on math scores. I got a 730 the second time, couldve gotten an 800 if i took it again.
