My parents earn about 200000. I have a sister who’s going to be a senior at BU next year with 0 in aid (we’re paying ~65000). I also have a brother who will be a freshman at American University next year with ~30000 in aid (we’re paying ~30000). When I’m a freshman, my brother will be a sophomore and my sister will have just graduated.
Where will I get good aid, need and/or merit based?

so, you’re saying that this Fall 2015, your family will have two in college and your sister is still getting NOTHING from BU??

Is the $30k in aid from American a “merit scholarship”? ( I suspect that your bro’s aid is merit)

what is your family’s EFC?

Do your parents own a business or take business deductions?

Do your parents have a good bit of assets?

Berkeley will cost your family $55k…no aid there at all.

You won’t get aid from GT. Doubtful any from UMich.

You have a 1490 M+CR…you won’t get merit at any of them, except maybe some from UF, but even UF is cheap with merit because they’re concentrating on need based aid and relying on BF and NMF for merit.

Are you a likely NMF?

Since it appears that your sister is getting NO aid from BU with 2 in college, then I suspect that your family has assets, or business deductions or the income is more than $200k.

If you are applying to a single choice EA school, how would you have several EA schools on your list?

I personally think your list is very top heavy. The schools are highly competitive. The generous need based aid they provide doesn’t do you any good unless you get accepted.

The exception is UF where you should be getting Bright Futures.

@mom2collegekids BU does not guarantee to meet full need…and they don’t. When our kid was a senior, his sister was a freshman. He did receive a need based great that one year of…drumroll…$250. No that is not a typo. His EFc went from $44,000 a year (which in 2003 was about full pay) to $22,000. As you can see…they did not meet much of that increased need.

My sister didn’t get aid because she didn’t apply when she got into college because we were fairly well off. My brothers aid was both need and merit. I’m Hispanic if that helps. Also, Duke, Mich and WashU give merit aid, right?

Your sister could have applied for aid for the upcoming year. BU allows that…and you definitely had a change in financial circumstances with a second kiddo in college.

I’m not saying your sister would have gotten a ton of aid…but she didn’t even try…and that makes no sense.

She can complete a fafsa right now and be eligible for a Direct Loan of $7500 for her senior year. Perhaps that should be considered as it might help the overall family finances.

Duke, Wash U and Michigan have very limited and highly competitive merit aid awards. michigan has actually decreased the number of generous merit awards for out of state students over the years. Michigan is moving toward meeting need for OOS kids, but it is not guaranteed…yet.

Does BU forbid a student from applying for aid for a later year if he doesn’t apply frosh year?

What aid did your brother get that is merit…and what did he get that is need based?

What is your brother’s FAFSA EFC?

Do your parents have a business or take business deductions?

Yes, Duke, UMich and WashU do give merit for top stats. Being Hispanic may help you get selected for merit at Duke or Washu, particularly if you raise your 1490 M+CR. I don’t know if UMich is allowed to consider URM status for merit.

No…The student could have applied for aid for this upcoming year at Boston Iniversity. There was a change in her financial situation…a sibling entered college.

And it’s not too late to file a fafsa to get that $7500 Direct Loan.

To answer @thumper1’s question above about how the OP can apply EA to other schools, from the Stanford web site:

Your list is too reach-heavy (UF + all reaches) do include actual matches ( a match is a university with 30%+ acceptance rate, regardless of your stats).

Penn RD
MIT RD
Carnegie Mellon RD
Cornell RD
Stanford ‘Single’ EA
Harvard RD
==> run the NPCs; no merit to be expected but “3 in college” will be factored in.

UF (safety) => BF, perhaps merit from Honors?

WashU RD
Duke RD => some merit, but very difficult to obtain.

GeorgiaTech EA => apply by October 15 if you want to try for merit (rare)

UCalBerkeley RD, Michigan EA = take them off the list, no FA/merit to be expected

Look into Emory, Tulane, UMiami, Case Western

^^No there will not be 3 in college. just 2 in college. The sister will have graduated. So her costs and expenses for that is water under the bridge.

Wow…maybe the parents need to contact the school and see if they can still apply for aid.

The deadlines have long since passed for returning students at BU. This student could complete a fafsa for Direct Loan purposes…but has missed the deadline for other forms of need band aid.

And like I says above, when our second kid entered college…BU gave our kid a $250 grant. That was the only additional aid he received.
