I just found out that I got 9 on AIME.It is much higher than I got last year, and I have chance to qualify for the USAMO. I know it is too late to send in anything, but is that necessary to let them know my score?

It is too late for anything further you submit to have an influence on the decision. From Ben's blog on Feb. 22:

Is it too late to send in supplementary materials?

Other than mid-year grades, yes. You're always welcome to send them but at this point the committee will not see them until after selection, when it will be too late for them to make a difference.

At this point they won't see your exciting update until after decisions are made, unfortunately. But congratulations!

uh yeah, decisions come out next saturday so chances are they wouldn't receive it in time. plus, one more thing isn't gonna tip the admissions factor that much, as impressive as it is.

RainXy, what did you do to prepare for the AIME? Everyone tells me that I need to go to artofproblemsolving.com, but it really doesn't help that much. I'm a freshman, so I just want something to do over spring break that'll improve my score next year (I got a 2 this year).

I didn't do anything special, only did some past tests for practice.

Yea, rainXy is a math genius.

The Art of problemsolving helps a good bit if you have the time.

I didn't have any time to prep and I had never taken the AIME before, or the AMC 12 for that matter and only got a 5.

good job rain! What was your final index?

@cooljoe The AoPS books help a lot in AIME and AMC prep (I went up 10 points on the AMC and 4 on the AIME this year after reading them). Also, they teach you a lot about math which you dont see in the classrooms if you are into that kind of stuff.

My final index was 219. I didn't do well on AMC.
My school only registered AMC A, which I heard is much harder than AMC B.

I took both, they aren't too different... if it turns out they are too disparate, there will be separate USAMO index scores for each, but I doubt it.

wow 9 is very high!
Congrats on your very high achievement! Bummer you couldn't update this fact to MIT.
I myself wanted to update MIT w/ a good news (ISEF finalist) but yeah..too late.

I'm sure you can tell other colleges you've applied to, though.

Good luck at USAMO, RainXy, and thanks for the advice!

Woah, make me feel dumb! I took the AIME... and... I think I got a 2? Last year I got a 0 (yeah, and I'm one of the smart people at my school).

But I got into MIT! :) So evidently these tests don't count against you. I'm sure since you're crazy-smart with your 9 you'll get in anyway.

My friend is a national merit scholar finalist, 2350 SAT, etc and in my IB Math HL class. She got a 1 so don't feel bad =)

Wait, you already took the AIME test? I took the AMC in the middle of Febraury and qualified. Should I already be taking AIME?

The first test took place on the 7th, but your school should still be able to contact them to have them send you the alternate exam which is taking place on the 21st.

Is that test date for both AMC exams (feb 1st and feb 15th)? Unluckily, March 21st is during spring break.

Yeah, I think you're supposed to be able to take either of the AIME tests after either of the AMC tests. The point of having it twice is so that if your school is on spring break for one of them you can sign up for the other instead.

If you take the AIME on the second test date, you have to pay. If you take it on the first test date, it is free.

Ah yeah, that's right. I think that's mostly just for extra processing and shipping fees since you're making them send you a whole new set of tests.

Will the cutoff really be as low as 219 this year? Last year it was 233.5 wasn't it?
