Air assault badge

usafa cadets…

can cadets still earn a “air assault badge” for completing the air assault program at Ft. Campbell?

like the parachute badge… after graduation does in apply on an active duty uniform?

is it possible to do soaring and parachute training?

I'm not sure about Air Assault, but it is possible to do both jump and soaring. You'd do one (hopefully) between your 4 and 3 dig years, and the other one would be taken during an academic year later on.

now they're starting a program for select ppl to take soaring end of freshmen year, jump over the summer, then epgrade the next fall... pretty good deal. wish i coulda had it

epgrade? what's that?

He meant upgrade. It's how soaring students become soaring instructor pilots.

oh haha well that makes sense now; how hard is it to get a soaring or jumping instructor's position? i know you've obviously gotta be an expert at whichever you do..

No, they will train you. It just takes getting through the application process. The jump master application is brutal though.

ah okay i stand corrected

I believe only 25 make the parachuting team each year (the Wings of Blue). I'm not sure on the numbers for Soaring IP slots, but those are very competitive as well.

There were 40 IP slots per semester this year.

Okay let me "jump" in here. Bullet has the real jump wings from doing a tour with the 82nd, he was very close to getting the toilet bowl. The reason he decided not to is because every time you jump you take the risk of injuring yourself.

As a parent I know that Bullet will ask our DS how bad do you want this...is it bad enough to ruin your chances of getting into an ejection seat aircraft?

During Bullets' time at Jump School there was a guy who got injured, he was a 16 guy, and if I recall correctly he lost his medical clearance. Many guys as Jump ALO's will do their mandatory jumps and that is it. The reason behind this is jumping out of perfectly good airplanes isn't worth losing the ability to fly perfectly goood jets.

Just my opinion for our experience...now throw it in the circular container

That's unfortunate. I haven't heard of any injuries serious enough from jump here to DQ people from flying. We also use the rectangular canopies and not round like army. The landings, if done right of course, can be walked out (did my last 3 like that).

Funny thing is wives would go out to the drop zone and count off the guys coming out looking for our husband, we were always wrong...yes, we knew how to count, but 3 C-130's dropping tens of guys makes it difficult to figure out if that was your spouse

Bullet cam home @ 3 in the am one time and said sorry I was late, but some guy landed in a tree and we had to get the cherry picker out to get him :D

You are right the chute makes the difference.

We keep teasing potter trying ot get her to try jump....she has no desire at all. She does want to go for soar this summer though.

Funny thing, coming in and during BCT and during 1st semester, I said I would never be able to jump. Not a chance. Never will. Just have to be happy with soaring. I have my jump wings now, funny how that works....
