AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Connor Dietz came off the bench in the second half to spark the Air Force offense and Jared Tew scored a 17-yard touchdown to lead the Falcons to a 10-0 win over Wyoming on Saturday.

Air Force (4-3, 3-1 Mountain West) has now won four straight over the Cowboys (4-3, 2-1), whose three-game winning streak ended.

Tew led Air Force’s rushing attack, finishing with 105 yards while Savier Stephens added 46.

All week long, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun was mum on whether he would insert Tim Jefferson back into the starting lineup after a balky right ankle sidelined him for the TCU game last weekend.

Jefferson started, but couldn’t move the Falcons.

Dietz entered soon after halftime. He guided the Falcons to two scores, a 29-yard field goal by Erik Soderberg and the sealing TD run by Tew in the fourth quarter.

That was more than enough for Air Force’s defense, one of the stingiest in the nation. The Falcons shut out of a conference opponent for the first time since a 24-0 win at Colorado State in 1997.

The Cowboys were rolling along coming into Saturday. They had won three straight and were averaging more than 32 points a game since true freshman Austyn Carta-Samuels took over at quarterback.

But Carta-Samuels struggled against the Falcons, completing 14 of 31 passes for 74 yards. He also threw an interception and the Cowboys never moved the ball inside the red zone.

A late post, but Soaring Son reports he lost three toes (and came close to losing another important appendage) at the TCU game…

I too almost lost many appendages at the games

10/24/2009 - SALT LAKE CITY – Seven yards was the margin of victory for Utah as the Utes’ defense held off Air Force on a fourth down in overtime to seal a 23-16 win.

Utah entered the game ranked 19th and 20th by the nation’s two college football polls and 18th in the Associated Press poll. It is the second nationally ranked team Air Force has played in three weeks.

The Air Force Academy brought national rankings to the game as well. The Falcons defense was ranked 10th in the nation among NCAA Division 1 schools, fourth in passing defense, seventh in scoring defense, and first in turnover margin in the nation, with 21 turnovers going in the Utah game. This led to a classic college football matchup, with neither team gaining too much of an overall edge and leaving the score tied 16-all as time ran out in regulation.

Entering overtime, each team was given the ball at the 25-yard line. Air Force won the toss and elected to start on defense, while Utah chose the south end zone in front of their vocal student second to defend.

Utah drove forward on five plays, until Utes quarterback Terrance Cain completed a pass to wide receiver David Reed, who stretched toward the goal-line marker on the right end. Falcons defensive back Jon Davis knocked the ball loose, but it bounced out of bounds to give Utah the ball at the 1-foot line. Three straight-ahead rushes by Utah eventually broke the plane of the goal line, giving Utah a 22-16 lead before 45,129 screaming red-clad fans. Joe Phillips added the extra point to make it 23-16 Utah.

Air Force took over and relied on their nationally ranked rushing attack to move the ball, as Falcons quarterback Connor Dietz ran the ball three straight plays. Utah’s stingy defense held Air Force to six yards, leading the Falcons with a fourth and four at the Utah 19. On that fourth down, Dietz connected with wide receiver Kevin Fogler on the right side, and Fogler’s forward progress gave the Falcons a first down at the Utah 15.

With a fresh set of downs, the Falcons tried a pass play, but Dietz had to throw the ball away due to the defense’s pass rush. A pitch to Falcon tailback Asher Clark gained 2 yards as he tried to round the edge on the left, and Dietz followed that second-down play with a keeper for 6 yards, moving the ball to the Utah 7 yard line as the Falcons faced another fourth down.

“There was no trickery or anything. We knew they were going to go with the option; that’s their bread and butter,” said Utah linebacker Stevenson Sylvester.

Dietz took the snap from center Michael Hampton, and tried to run between the center and right guard.

“I thought I could squeeze through there, after our offensive line had a good surge, but they had a few guys there we couldn’t stop,” said Dietz.

Utah linebackers Mike Wright and Sylvester combined to stuff Dietz at the line for no gain, and the Utah crowd roared as the game ended in a Ute victory on their 7-yard line.

“This is exactly the kind of game I would expect based on our series with Air Force,” said Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham. “This was very similar to games we’ve had with them in the last 15 years. They’re a tough football team. I’m proud of how my team played. We just keep finding ways to win at the end.”

“I think that Utah is an outstanding squad,” said Falcons head coach Troy Calhoun. “That’s one of those squads that, given the chance, they’ll win double-digit games by the end of the year. To be able to come here and get into a position to win down the stretch, you have to play some solid football and we did - at least during stretches. We could have played better and I think we know that.”

For the Falcons, the Utah loss makes four close games the Falcons have lost, by a total of 20 points.

“These are tough, hard pills to swallow,” Calhoun. “You just have to find a way to dig and come up with a way to win the football game. You have to fine a way to make a couple (of) more plays as a team.”

The loss to Utah dropped the Falcons to 4-4 on the season and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference. With the win, Utah upped their record to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The win also makes Utah bowl-eligible and keeps the Utes in contention with BYU and TCU for the MWC title and a Bowl Championship Series bid. Scouts from two NFL teams and one bowl committee were also in attendance.

The Falcons return to the gridiron Oct. 31 when they travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to battle MWC rival Colorado State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.

College Gameday coming to Air Force

ESPN’s popular college football pre-game show will broadcast live from Air Force on Saturday, November 7th. The Falcons play Army later that afternoon.

The stop at the Air Force Academy is part of a week long salute to American troops.

ESPN will honor veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces with a week of programming – America’s Heroes: A Salute to Our Veterans – culminating in special SportsCenter editions from West Point on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11

College Game Day is hosted by Colorado Springs native Chris Fowler who is a graduate of Palmer High School.

yeah, too bad they aren’t showing the game though… 2 out of 3 weeks CGD is at a mountain west school and neither game gets the coverage. lame

Air Force QB Dietz has broken hand, is out at least 3 weeks

THE GAZETTE

Air Force sophomore quarterback Connor Dietz will miss at least three weeks with a broken bone in his right (throwing) hand, coach Troy Calhoun said after Monday’s practice.

Dietz broke the second metacarpal bone (the bone in his hand below the forefinger’s knuckle) on the fourth play of Saturday’s game at Utah, a 23-16 loss. He seemed to hold the hand awkwardly between some plays but played the entire game and was praised by teammates for his toughness.

A break was discovered, however, and Dietz underwent surgery Monday to have two pins inserted into his hand.

With Dietz out, sophomore Tim Jefferson will take back the starting job, starting with Saturday’s game at Colorado State. Junior Ben Cochran will be Jefferson’s backup and sophomore tailback Asher Clark would be used if both Jefferson and Cochran go down.

Jefferson, last season’s Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, started the first three games of the season but injured his ankle in the third game at New Mexico. Dietz and Jefferson then traded starts, with Dietz starting the fourth and sixth games and Jefferson the fifth and seventh.

But in that seventh game, against Wyoming, Dietz replaced Jefferson midway through the third quarter, led the team to a victory and got the call as the starter at Utah. In that game he rushed for 98 yards and completed 7-of-10 passes, earning praise from Calhoun and seeming to entrench himself as the starter.

Now, however, Jefferson has a chance to win back his job.
