They're for real.

The 11th-ranked Air Force Falcons manhandled No. 3 Colorado College in the annual meeting between the Colorado Springs rivals, winning the clash for the first time since Nov. 9, 1985.

Air Force not only snapped a 25-game losing streak to CC with its 4-1 win in front of a standing room-only crowd at Cadet Ice Arena, it also extended - and brought legitimacy to its 13-0 record.

DENVER • History trumped perfection at Magness Arena on Saturday but Air Force earned respect even in defeat.

“I can’t say we’ve played a better team all year,” said DU coach George Gwozdecky. “That game could’ve gone either way. If we play a seven-game series, it goes seven games.”

Rhett Rakhshani gave DU a 1-0 lead in a tight, tense game at 14:50 of the second period. Scott Mathis tied it for Air Force at 2:31 of the third period but the Pioneers answered in just 30 seconds as Kyle Ostrow found the net.

“That squashed the momentum we got,” Air Force coach Frank Serratore said. “Their third goal was demoralizing.”

That came from Rakhshani at 6:22 of the final period. The Pioneers added an empty-net goal at 18:12.

No. 10 DU (9-5-1), a seven-time national champion, improved to 28-3 against Air Force. The Falcons snapped a 19-game losing streak against the Pioneers last year but have never beaten DU in consecutive seasons.

Air Force did snap a 25-game losing streak against No. 3 Colorado College on Friday. The Falcons have never beaten CC and DU in the same season.

No. 11 Air Force (13-1-0) was the nation’s last unbeaten team.

“They should be a top 10 team, probably a top five team,” Gwozdecky said.

After spending the first two months of the season ranked in the top three, Colorado College dropped Monday in both national polls.

The Tigers, who host Minnesota-Duluth this weekend, are ranked sixth in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll and fifth in the USCHO.com poll.

The Tigers have lost four Friday games in a row, only to rebound on Saturday each time, a pattern they hope to change this weekend.

Air Force, which snapped a 25-game losing streak to CC last Friday, is ranked in the top 10 for the first time in academy history.

The Falcons (13-1) suffered their first loss of the season Saturday to No. 7 Denver and will play host to Rochester Institute of Technology this weekend in their last series before holiday break.

USAFA, Colo. – Air Force clinched a share of the Atlantic Hockey Association regular-season title with a 3-1 win over RIT in the final regular-season conference game, at the Frank Ritter Arena in Rochester, N.Y. Air Force won the AHA Tournament in 2007 and 2008 but this is the first regular-season title in school history. Air Force and RIT each tied for the regular-season title with 42 points, but Air Force is the No. 1 seed in the tournament based on goal-differential in head-to-head competition. Air Force was a +1 in goal differential in four games vs. RIT this season.

Air Force is now off until March 13-15 when the Falcons will host an AHA quarterfinal series at Cadet Ice Arena. The opponent will not be determined until March 7. Air Force could play either No. 7 Holy Cross, No. 8 Sacred Heart, No. 9 UConn or No. 10 AIC. Game times will be 7:05 on Friday and Saturday and Sunday if necessary.

sadly its during Recognition, so freshmen certainly won't be going (at least friday night, and i doubt they'll want to go saturday night even if they can make part of it)

ya i was bummed when i found this out. Oh well, its worth it!

I definitely won't be going either. I plan on sleeping as much as possible during Recognition when I'm not required to inflict pain on the frosh. Err, I mean, "train and develop officers of character in service to our nation," of course. ;)

I doubt many people in the Wing is going, sadly. Mainly because they'll be thinking along the same lines as petko.
