Air Force ROTC at MIT

Hello. I'm a sophomore in high school that would like to become an Air Force officer. My two top school choices are MIT and the Air Force Academy. However, I don't know a lot about how rotc works at MIT. All I know is that MIT has a very good aerospace engineering program (which is what I am looking for.) I would like to double major in aerospace engineering and history, so any information anyone has about double majoring and rotc at MIT would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. : )

My husband was an aerospace engineering major (class of 2007), and he thinks it would be possible, although tough, to double in 16 (aerospace engineering) and 21H (history). For a double major at MIT, you need to complete the requirements for two majors, and course 16 has a lot of required classes. Doubling in 16 and anything will require several semesters of heavy courseloads, certainly.

I’m sending you a PM about ROTC, so check your PM box. :)

I’ve heard mostly good things about MIT’s ROTC program. It’s a local ROTC hub, since it also provides an ROTC program for several other area schools (like Harvard and Tufts) that don’t have their own, so you get to interact with a lot of different people. Gen. Petraeus spoke at the commissioning ceremony this year (if I remember right, his son was one of the cadets being commissioned). It is a significant time commitment, so that would be another thing on top of your double major.

I visited the Air Force Academy as a high schooler (and my aunt is a USAFA alum), and I will tell you that while it and MIT are both fantastic schools, they have very different cultures and student life. I’d say that you’ll want to visit both, if you haven’t already, to get a feel for them. :)

I think I’ve already pretty much accepted that I’ll be having some difficult semesters because of USAFA. There are so many requirements for military academies, academic and not, that I’m sure double majoring plus rotc at MIT would probably be at about the same level of difficulty. I do think maybe I’m being a little bit crazy hoping to major in two completely different subjects, but oh well!

And Jessie, that’s why I can’t decide. I haven’t seen either of them so I’m not sure if I want rotc or full-time military.

Thanks guys! I just needed to make sure that everything I’ve mentioned is actually allowed at MIT and not too crazy. : )
