Hello to all! I'd appreciate some advice as to my situation. I'm considering enrolling into University of Rochester this upcoming fall. My only concern is that upon contact with the commander of the AFROTC unit in RIT (which hosts the detachment for the area, including UR), he said that there currently aren't any AFROTC cadets coming from UR.

My question is: would the constant commute to RIT be difficult? What would be the best transportation method be to attend all of the training days? I don't live in the United States, so I'm not familiar with the area, yet alone the transportation available in Rochester.

Any advice from current cadets, students, or anyone else really(!) would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey there,

I lived in Rochester from 1993 to 2010 so can comment a little bit.

If you have a car, the commute is not going to be a problem at all. I’d say it will take 15-20 minutes on average.

Unfortunately, there’s virtually nothing in the way of public transportation.

If you want to take a cab, my guess is it would be about $20-$25, and there aren’t just cabs milling about the university so you’d need to call one in advance to get you.

I don’t know of any transportation between RIT and U. Rochester that is provided by the university, but it may make sense to inquire if this is important to you.

It’s 5 miles. A bike would work in decent weather.

Unfortunately decent weather is one thing you cannot count on in Rochester - - from October to mid April. And when I say that, I mean there are considerably fewer fair weather days than foul weather days. And plenty of snow and precipitation.

And since ROTC usually has early morning meetings (for mandatory PT) at 7 am, from Oct thru March, it will be quite dark outside at that time of day and commuting by bike will be more dangerous than commuting later in the day.

Rochester is not a terribly bike-commuter friendly city by an stretch and most roads not only lack bike lanes, but also shoulders wide enough to ride. Drivers are not well-versed in “sharing the road” with bicyclists.

UR has a zipcar rental program on campus. You must be 19 or older to access the service. Costs are $35 annually, plus $7/hr for car rental.

UR also offers taxi vouchers for use with Marketplace Taxi service. It’s $10 each way to RIT.

No direct public transit from UR to RIT. Also RIT isn’t on any of UR’s shuttle routes.

You can reach RIT by not very traveled roads but doing that at 7AM in the winter would be beyond the call of duty.

BTW, I was born on an air force base.

Thank you everyone for your replies! The assistant professor of AS in RIT insists that there shouldn’t be a problem in hitching a ride with other cadets. However, I must admit it isn’t exactly appealing to completely rely on one person for transportation purposes, because it’s never truly guaranteed. I want to be able to commit myself to the program. Unfortunately, I won’t be having a car at UR, lol.

This is the only issue that’s really holding me back from committing to Rochester. I have offers at other schools that host AFROTC on-campus. The other main schools I’m considering are University of Miami and North Carolina State University (both for engineering).

Thank you again for your advice. I’ll definitely keep them in mind while I’m forming my decision…

Just re-bumping this thread. I actually made the decision to pursue this option! My commander said that it’s common for people to share rides, so I’ll be relying on that in the beginning. Wondering if there are any other future or current UR students considering this out there now…

You should go to the Facebook group for your class of 2017 and ask. There are not many students posting here.

You can also join the other classes of 2016, 2015 and ask. Freshman are not allowed to have cars so students in the other classes may be able to help you. Good luck!

I am also going to UR and will be going to RIT for AFROTC, I think UR will let freshman have cars for this purpose only but I am hoping to hitch a ride for the first year at least.

Meliora2:

Hey! Nice to know that there’s someone else out there. I’m hoping to hitch a ride to and from RIT, too. Do you mind if we share FB details to keep in touch? It’s most likely that we’ll be going to and from RIT together since we’re from the same school. You can private message me if you want to.
