Air tickets

Let's say I want to fly to US from country X. If (1)I buy the ticket to fly from X to the US, it costs more than (2) buying a ticket to fly direct from country X to country Y and then buying another ticket to fly from country Y to the US.. (both tickets are from different airlines)

Can I use the cheaper way (2) by buying both fares online? Is way (2) doable? What are the disadvantages of doing way (2)? for example, where should I put my baggages when I'm in country Y.. and stuffs like that.. way (2) seems to save me a few hundred dollars but I'm afraid that there will be some unseen disadvantages..

Thank you..

^^ If you have your second ticket (Y–>USA) when you’re checking-in in country X, then I think they could check-in your luggage all the way for both flights. So you’d only have to pick it up when you arrive to USA.
At least that’s what they did when I was flying from country A to B and then to USA.
