Alabama #34

this was in Birmingham’s paper today

[UA Ranked Among U.S. News’ Top 50 Public Universities | NBC 13](http://www2.nbc13.com/news/2010/aug/17/ua-ranked-among-us-news-top-50-public-universities-ar-717573/)

^^^

See, now your D has to visit Bama. :)

You need to bargain with her… :)

If you are able to talk her into a visit, you should set up a tour time and then email Jami Gates at honors with the tour date/time, your D’s stats, her intended major, and Jami will arrange a wonderful day for you both.

jami gates 205-348-5599 jami.n.gates@ua.edu

she has a 3.35 now and is taking a heavy load this semester and counselor says she has to make all A’s to get a 3.5- very doubtful. auburn is #38 so if she goes there I’ll be happy. she still is applying to a few smaller out of state schools but I doubt she’ll get enough $$$ to attend.

she should probably be able to get in to either ua or auburn.

I know she can get in I was hoping for a 3.5 for the instate freshman scholarship

Neither Bama nor Auburn consider grades from senior year. GPA is computed using ONLY the grades from 9 - 11.

Your Daughter’s 3.35 will be the the considered GPA. I just called Auburn to verify.

Sorry to give you this unfortunate news that she won’t qualify for an assured scholarship from either school.

However, she should still tour Bama and apply, because while she won’t qualify for an auto scholarship from either school, Bama will likely give her a scholarship in the spring since her ACT is high. (She should send an updated transcript after Dec midterm grades)

If money is a concern, then she definitely needs to apply to both schools just to improve her chances that one school will award her a competitive scholarship.

I just emailed the counselor from Auburn for our school and she told me that they do reconsider grades after Christmas if there is money left over-She says there is not guarantee but possible.she qualifies for $2,500 with a 3.35 so we will just see. We actaully have PACT which I’ve been told should work for her. We have college accounts set up also so money is not an issue (would be nice though to get the scholarship)

she says there is not guarantee but possible.

Right, Bama has the same policy. Also, those who don’t get the auto scholarships, but still have strong scores and at least a 3.0 are usually given the dept scholarships.

What is your D’s likely major?

Good that she has Pact and college fund, too. :)

she’s not sure of major-maybe Biology minor Spanish -maybe education

I think education is one of those majors that has its own scholarship apps (even though there is an assumption that there is only one app, Education has its own…so be aware).

Is she thinking of becoming a bio teacher? or is she thinking of some kind of health field?

Bama has LOTS of nursing scholarships and is opening its new building for the College of Nursing…

[Capstone College of Nursing - The University of Alabama](http://nursing.ua.edu/) Here’s a pic; it’s very pretty.

Is your D a likely NMSF? What was her PSAT?

No she is just an average A/B student-

^^^

I’m not sure what the above is in answer to.

NMFS isn’t based on grades. It’s only based on PSAT score.

https://oira.auburn.edu/about/publications/usnews2011_FINAL.pdf

Oh what qualifies for NMFS

Hlsess: Go to this link. It will give you information about the NM program.

[National Merit Scholarship Corporation - NMSP](http://www.nationalmerit.org/nmsp.php#commended)

Generally, the commended score is around 200 to 202. Each state, however, has a set score for NM semifinal consideration. For example, Virginia (my state) is usually around the 217 to 218 mark.

an average a/b student isn’t likely to be NMF.

Is the GPA Weighted or UW?

*Oh what qualifies for NMFS *

*NMFS isn’t based on grades. It’s only based on PSAT score. *

^^^
That’s what qualifies a student.

*an average a/b student isn’t likely to be NMF. *

Not true…

It’s not unusual for a student with a 3.5 to score high enough on the PSAT to be NMSF/NMF.

Is the GPA Weighted or UW?

What are you asking?

NMF doesn’t have a “minimum GPA”. However, if you have a D for a semester grade, you may not go from NMSF to NMF. Kids make NMF with one or two C’s.

A person can be a NMSF will a lowish GPA and/or some bad grades because only PSAT is looked at.

I read Mits’s post as asking if the hless’s D’s GPA was W or UW because if her UW GPA was 3.35, her W might be 3.5 or above. Since UA accepts the higher of the two GPA’s, we both know that it’s a common question asked of UA applicants who say that they have a GPA of less than 3.5 to see if they automatically qualify for the higher scholarships. Of course, I could have misinterpreted Mits’s post and I apologize if that was the case.
