because of weather issues delaying the Dec SAT in some areas, the deadline has been extended to all applicants. The website still states Dec 15th as the deadline but that will likely be changed soon. Regional recruiters began providing the new deadline today.

For those not familiar with the ASSURED merit scholarships for stats, please look at the link below for details. Altho the link is for the College of Engineering, it lists the other scholarships as well....so a very convenient one-stop place to look.

Very likely the deadlne for stacking eng'g scholarships will also be extended since they tend to follow whatever the school is doing.

For those majoring in eng'g or comp sci, take special note of the stacking scholarships, particularly the one for those with an ACT 30-31...those students get an extra bonus to full tuition plus $2500 per year. All of Bama's engineering disciplines and Comp Sci are ABET accredited. Bama has a brand new 900,000 sq ft Science and Engineering Complex...gorgeous and state of the art.

This link details the University scholarships, the eng'g scholarships, and the NMF/NA scholarships.

The school app and the scholarship app are both very easy to do. They take like 5 minutes…no essays, no LORs needed. Bama admits by test scores, GPA, and HS curriculum.

Although the scholarships are assured for stats, submitting the scholarship app is a needed formality. Again, very easy to do. For many kids this can be a financial safety.

I’m reading about all the rejections and acceptances and have started to second-guess S1’s list. I think I’m going to have him take a look at UA. Thanks for the information on the deadline.

I see that your son is a likely NMF, so he’d get the big scholarship. What’s his major? If it’s Eng’g or CS then he’d get an add’l $2500 per year…so practically a full ride.

Right now, he’s considering a double major with physics and (possibly) math. But I notice that they have a computer engineering/physics double major and I could see him being interested in that as well. I think his “ideal” school would be in a bigger town, but maybe a big student body would suffice!

Tuscaloosa is about 100,000 people so it’s not a small town. It’s more like a medium/large city.

the Computer Engineering/physics double major would be very good career-wise!

While deciding, when he applies, he should put the engineering discipline down as his major to qualify for the extra scholarship.

The way double majors work is this… When a student applies, he can only list one major. However, once he matriculates, he can add the second major. So, in your son’s case, he should list Computer Engineering…

Spoke to S1 and he said he’d like to learn more about it and apply. And he was REALLY happy that there is no essay required.

Things are so different than when my husband and I were in college, so we’re kind of learning as we go along. Both of our sons are also much better students than we were, so , more options. Financial aid is important for us and I think this would add a nice balance to the list.

Thanks again - it’s great to have recommendations from someone who has been through it.

1250 CR+M two tries, no prep (she kept on delaying it in deference to heavy course hours and EC). She has recently had foot surgery so now she is home bound for awhile so I can keep her still long enough to do a prep course I have bought through the college board…But it seems we have misjudged…most colleges have either December scholoarship deadlines or use the SAT scores at acceptance…

The plan was to take a final shot at the SAT (and one at the ACT) in each of the January sittings)

major - since she will be getting a concurrent Associates at the community college with hours that will hopefully transfer, she wants to double major in Psychology and Theatre.

Well, there are theater scholarships…she needs to look into those for audition times. She’d have to declare Theatre as primary major and then add psych after she matriculates.

Some have PM’d me about the GPA req’t for merit…

The required 3.5 GPA can be met with WEIGHTED grades as long as the GPA is written on the transcript. if your school doesn’t weight grades, then have the GC hand-write the weighted GPA on the transcript and Bama will accept that.

Also…Bama accepts ALL classes for GPA…even religion, electives, and PE. So, if your GPA gets a boost from Band or Chorus, then super.

DO NOT ATTEND THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

The campus is too beautiful. The Honors College is far too accommodating, intimate, and flexible. The people are so friendly it makes you feel eerily warm. The Greek culture is so dominant that the vast majority of students don’t belong to it.

The football culture is so dominant that the thousands of students who couldn’t give a rip about it feel free not to attend or be bothered. The party atmosphere is so overwhelming that top scholars eschew it and, gasp, achieve!

The culture is so foreign to non-southerners that the majority of incoming freshmen are from out of state. The students are so out of step with the times that they walk around smiling and laughing without being drunk or stoned. The life is so perversely balanced that students both work hard and play hard.

The dorms are so luxurious and private that they facilitate studying. The freshman orientation experiences are so craftily structured that they practically force you to make great friends and discover extracurricular opportunities.

And the school is so disorganized that, to quote my son (who’s a NMF senior and about to blow this popsicle stand), “The thing about 'Bama is that if there’s something you want to do, the school will do everything it can to help you make it happen.” Yuck!

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! THIS IS YOUR FINAL WARNING.

Even if the high school has some ridiculously inflated weighted GPA like 5.something or 6.something (as some have reported)?

I think that that students that have 5.1+ and 6.X GPA’s aren’t using a 4.0 scale for unweighted. I know that some Texas students’ GPA’s were on a 6.0 scale and those had to be recalculated.

I’ve never seen where an unweighted A is a 4.0, but the weighted A is greater than 5.0.

I’ve seen schools give a .25 boost for A+, .5 boost for honors and a 1.0 boost for APs. Are you saying that some are giving a 2.0 boost for APs? Even so, all the classes wouldn’t be APs.

Anyway…if your school uses a 4.0 uweighted scale and gives a typical boost for honors and AP, then that should be fine.

Oh it wasn’t in response to a nasty post. Not at all. It was just a humorous post that a parent made elsewhere and he said I could share it. He often has clever posts that make us laugh.
